The actor just passed away from a four-year battle with colon cancer. Gotta admit the news surprised me since I was not aware he had it. Not being the biggest fan of superhero films, I remember him more for his role as Jackie Robinson from '42.' But obviously more will likely remember him as the Black Panther from the movie title of the same name and those Avengers films.

Very sad. Young, talented, and seemed like a wonderful person. Such a future ahead of him. And in a relatively short career played some really iconic parts, both real and fictional. Damn shame, especially in these times, when we need all the good people and “heroes” as we can get.

Gone too soon. Ironically, died on Jackie Robinson day in MLB (which they changed date to accommodate 2020 season)

Good catch. That's usually April 15th when Jackie made his MLB debut (1947), but obviously there wasn't baseball (or any sport) being played April 15th of this year.

I think they should retire black panther for now. Please don't make his sister somehow become it. Rip Chad.

Crazy that his illness was kept so under wraps. Had no idea. He was always in such phenomenal shape for those Marvel movies, too.

I think Shuri actually becomes Black Panther in the comics?

I complain about having to work out, and Im not dealing with chemo and surgery. Perspective:(

First of all RIP.

Do you think they'd continue the character with a different actor? I was already skeptical about the future of Marvel with the loss of Cap and Ironman. They were the heart and soul. Going forward with Fat Thor, Nonraging Hulk, and a bunch of other meh characters isn't promising. It was down to Spiderman and Black Panther, unless you're a feminist cartoon movie buff (very small subset).

Deadpool could save the MCU franchise, especially teaming up with Spiderman or as some people suggest, an alternate timeline with Cap.

I wasn’t really excited about Phase 4 anyway, and I was a huge fan of all the movies leading up to Endgame. I feel like the Infinity Saga was a good ending for the Marvel run.

With no Boseman to carry the franchise as Black Panther there’s not a lot to get excited about. The Eternals? I guess the Guardians of the Galaxy are always fun. Now they’re going to make Natalie Portman the female Thor in Love & Thunder. Doctor Strange is a fine auxiliary character and Spider-Man is good. But it’s not going to have the same juice moving forward. The stakes can’t get any higher than they got in the Infinity Saga so whatever they do will always feel lesser. And ... no Iron Man.

I like that idea but for Deadpool to save the MCU wouldn’t you have to neuter him and make him PG-13 Deadpool?

Yeah. It doesn't look good. Hoping DC steps forward with something better than the last go-round.

Shuri does become the Black Panther in the comics.
I think a cool storyline for BP2 would be have a T’Challa get mortally wounded, only way to save his life is to transfer his spirit into the body of Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) since he’s the only person who housed the spirit of the Black Panther previously. Movie would then be centered around T’Challa Struggling with having Killmonger’s memories of being an assassin/murderer and learning how to be the Black Panther again.
Yes, I’m a big nerd and think about these kind of thing way too mich

RIP Vonte Mack.

maybe but Deadpool did rake in some serious cash with an "R" rating as well

Oh I get that which was kind of my point. Deadpool 100% works best as an R rated superhero. But if you wanted to use him in the extended MCU (like with Spider-Man) he couldn’t be that version of himself. Marvel studios would never make an R rated Spider-Man movie. So that’s why it’s hard to fit him into the extended MCU. Jmho

Maybe they bring the Fantastic Four into the mix? Wolverine?

Losing Ironman and Cap was pretty much a death blow to begin with. I think they neutered Thor and Hulk to make room for Captain Marvel. But no one can stand that actress so that's a dead end, IMHO.

Yeah, Captain Marvel pretty much sucks. I forgot to even mention her when I was talking about phase 4.

losing Black Widow is tough for the franchise, too (I know they MADE a stand alone BW but obviously it can’t go anywhere from there).

they could just do the Xmen timeline. I can't even keep up with what they do in those movies. Wolverine was born in the 1700s and has traveled into the future and back in time. Hell they even have timeline names, Xmen Present Past Future Tense Parallel Universe Just give us your money. And how many times has Loki died?

Just keep making the movies and pretend nothing happened in the previous ones, although Robert Downey Jr is approaching 55 years old, he doesn't have many years in the tank to fake being middle age unless they go CGI.

Making Thor fat and handing it off to Natalie Portman - good lord, just kill him already and give him a viking funeral. I'm not watching that hot mess. Also due to contractual issues, I've read that Hulk can never have a stand alone movie in the present form so I guess it doesn't matter they made him a disabled nerd.

So, in terms of Marvel stuff...

Thor will keep going. Obviously they aren't going to keep him as Fat Thor... that was a one time thing (which I f'ing LOVED... first, bc it was a great "F you" to the women who love to swoon over him, and second because it was funny, and finally because it helped with the bigger story for him, a serious one in which he is dealing with the death of his mother, father, brother, people... it helped bring a seriousness to Thor). And they aren't looking to get RID of Chris and replace him with Nat Portman... Hemsworth has said he wants to keep at it. My guess is Portman does this movie and that's it, but Hemsworth will be around.

There are plenty of charismatic folks in Marvel, although I also will REALLY miss Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, and losing Boseman is such a kick in the dick. Tom Holland is great, the whole Guardians group is great, Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth are great, Jeremy Renner is still doing stuff, Falcon and the Winter Soldier are coming, Paul Rudd is funny as hell, Don Cheadle is great, Ryan Reynolds is awesome, Kat Dennings boobs are great...

And this upcoming phase of Marvel characters might not be the most famous ones...

.... but the X-Men are out there, somewhere. And that should be f'ing EPIC.

I feel like Marvel has really done an amazing job with this whole set of movies... it's maybe the most impressive overall work in film history, as crazy as that might sound, given the size and scale and scope and consistent quality... and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, as much as it sucks to see guys like Evans, Downey, and now Boseman go:(

Agree with almost all of that. Just don't see how you go forward successfully when you pretty much shut down the original six (the first Avengers movie was a game changer because of them and their chemistry) and were hoping to go forward with a new group and one is now gone (BP), one is a tug-of-war with Sony (Spidey), and the one you are depending on as your new anchor is...Brie Larson, who tells white men not to go to her movies.

They need another game changer, like a Fantastic Four where they absolutely nail the casting. The X Men storylines seem played out to me.

I think the casting for X Men will be the key. If they can find charm and chemistry like they did for the first group of Avengers, we are set.

Fingers crossed...

While it sucks to lose some of these actors, the good news is that some of the characters can live on.

You already have Falcon taking over for Captain America and possibly the kid from Iron Man 3 as a replacement for Tony Stark. It might be time to bring in She Hulk to replace the Hulk. Then of course you have the X-Men and Fantastic Four still out there.

The Mysterio storyline about the snap and the multiverse was a perfect setup to do the crossover between the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Avengers. It would have been a simple solution to tie them altogether. Unfortunately that storyline ended up a lie.

I am still hoping they will do the Secret Wars storyline in the future. I do believe it included all 3 of the big hero teams to go along with all of their villains and an even more powerful cosmic threat than Thanos (The Beyonder).

I have been preaching to my nerd brethren and family... Dr. Doom. Not that whack job from the first 2 FF movies. The whole backstory Dr. Doom is the most interesting character in Marvel, bar none. (DP is the most entertaining).

Dr. Doom loses his mother to the devil as a child. And his father to the Dictator of Latvaria. He spends the rest of his life driven to rescue his mother ( imprisoned in hell) and ruling the country of Latvaria as a benevolent despot so no one loses a family member again. He is jealous of Reed Richards for his seemingly easy life, and beautiful wife and children. Reed represents the life Doom never had, but desires more than anything.

He is the benevolent tyrant who will nevet sleep, or rest, because what he does, he does for other peoples benefit. That sort of person will never be satisfied, or content. They know what is best for you, and he will make you get it, good and hard.

Thats how you save the MCU.
