Rant from Former Players Wife on Uniforms

Sounds like something straight off this board:

Kentucky has unveiled new football uniforms as well as new logos that some like, some don’t. I got an e-mail from the wife of a former football player — who asked not to be identified so UK officials would not be upset with her — and she is not a fan of the new uniforms at all.

“My first reaction was sadness. The more I’ve thought about it I’m mad and embarrassed. I understand that Coach Stoops feels the need to change the culture and mindset of UK football since we do not have a storied program. Can he not do it in an original fashion?” she said.

I think if you look closely enough you will pretty much always find that you are copying something off of someone. I think our new logo is kind of strange, but it does not immediately invoke thoughts of the logos of other teams. We have one of the most common mascot names... some of the logos are certainly going to look similar. That's just going to be the nature of the beast. No need to get so upset about it.

Exactly. In the list of issues concerning UK football, uniform style/color/variations/logos doesn't even register, IMO.

Exactly, who cares what a former player's wife thinks about the uniforms or what Stoops is doing anyway. I think the changes are good and add excitement to the program for today's recruits, nothing wrong with that. I'm very much a traditionalist but I like the new uniforms and new wildcat. Not a real fan of the new UK but can live with it and will become used to it. Our logos have changed in past times as well so this is just another step in the history of UK logos, no big deal.

who cares about an ex players spouse? cheezus.
then tell Larry Vaught to quit giving them a forum.

This lady acts as if we had some great tradition we are changing. She doesn't even know that we've used the checkerboard long before UT did and btw...who freakin cares? It's not like one program owns checkerboards or that they are soo original that no one else does it. I guess we're copying other programs with our blue endzones. Or using a Wildcat as a mascot means we're ripping off K-State, Arizona, Villanova, and all the other Wildcat teams out there.

And the fact she talks about having a top 30 class means nothing because we're 12th(actually we're 10th but right there with SC at #9) in the SEC. She obviously doesn't remember our 50 and 60 ranked classes we had a few years back. Or that we're beating out P5 schools for guys instead of Cleveland State and Ohio University.

I'll add to the rant.

I agree with her on many points and I have to say I have similar feelings ranging from sad to mad.

It has frustrated me since the Rich Brooks all-blue Fighting Smurf days when I found out that the University of Buffalo had the same uniforms, colors, helmets down the the interlocking block letters.

What concerned me is that did they copy us or did we copy them? One way is bad enough and the other should be be downright unacceptable.

An SEC team can't have original stuff?

Come on. Can't we do better than that?

I despise the checkerboard.

We may have had the checkerboard at Stoll Field but when anyone around football, especially SEC football sees a checkerboard pattern how many people think of UT first?

Personally the only thing about our program that I want faintly resembling UT is wins.

And they have stuff that I do like- bigger numbers, helmet stripes (they aren't just their to look pretty but on film you can tell where the players are looking which is a major coaching point) but I don't want to see us copying that because I think we can do better.

Checkerboard may have been a part of our program at one time but UT has made it theirs and to use it now looks like a weak copy no matter how you spin it.

The fact that you have to spin it says it all.

Heck why not just adopt houndstooth? At least we'd be copying a National Championship program.

The point about the band's power K formation again looks like a UT knockoff since they have made the Power T theirs since the Doug Dickey days.

Similarly on the entrance to the field ... How many other teams do the exact same thing? I'm not unpatriotic but does every team run on the field through smoke with a flag now?

Don't get me started on that ... That's an entirely different post.

The Anthracite unis which look cool have already been used by WVU as tribute to their coal heritage. We have coal too but dang do we have to copy that two years after they introduce them?

Heck, why don't we just place a big chunk of coal at the entrance to the field and have the players touch it as they run on the field?

Or would that be too much like Clemson does with Howard's Rock?

The new logo immediately reminded me of the old KWC basketball logo from probably the 70's among others.

Again, can't we do better?

Unfortunately when it comes to our uniforms, marketing, branding and such this pretty much is my idea how things go in those meetings where our brain trust decides such things

(Pardon the language)

It seems like no matter how hard we try we miss opportunities and come off as "Johnny Come Latelies".

This is another one.

Long way to say, I'm not necessarily against change as I understand the appeal to kids, etc. But I have a hard time believing we can't do better and be more original.

I'm sorry we may be trying for something new but I don't see any vision much less THE vision for a new image.

Till then I guess we'll just have to be content getting smaller midgets.

Hey, Larry, I want to ***** and moan, and I'm an important person. I'm the wife of a former player. Oh, but don't tell anybody who I am...

No offense, but just shut up. Don't complain to a journalist who you know will publish your email and bash the team and staff and then ask not to be identified.

“I get that we’re trying to be flashy and stand out to lure players. It seems to me we’re doing a lot of ‘fluff’ type things but not following through on the substance. The meat of the matter is we need to produce on the field. Our recruiting class is ranked 29th in country. YAY!! We’re still 12th in the SEC.

“New uniforms are wonderful and something fans can spend money on trying to be current. How about being relevant where it truly counts, on the football field?”

Hey, lady, what was the football team's record during your husband's playing days? If you're even really a former player's wife.

I think the uniforms are good (hate the logo), do think it's funny how many people chastise others who don't like them with "why do you care what our uniforms look like?? Why does it matter??" Only to follow it up with "I like the uniforms." If it really doesn't matter, then your opinion is just as worthless.

I never liked Woodson and that gangs uniform , but liked our play under them.

I dislike the new logo, but the uniforms are OK I guess. If we rip off 6 or 8 wins I'll love them.

Yep, if it'd help them win they could play nekkid as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, our players might run a lot faster if they didn't have all those pads to protect them. I know I certainly did when we played a pickup TACKLE game without any pads (kept our clothes on though) against the Marine unit we were training on the Hawk CW Radar system. The only time in my life when I felt a huge and lasting adrenalin rush, a physical thing that lasted for about a 45 yard kickoff return. Played two Saturdays before our CO banned the games because of a couple of broken bones and a busted spleen.

But hey, they are getting rewarded pretty well, at least the RBs could play nekkid, might have to worry about a couple of them running the other way though.

If we had a good history of winning, I'd be more upset. But we've only had ~50 seasons above .500 in 123 seasons of playing football. Only 18 in the last 61 yrs. So, as long as it gets us wins and gets us recruits changing things shouldn't be an issue.

Per Rivals ratings we finished tenth in the SEC, which had five of the top ten classes. We had our FIRST five star in history (didn't have five stars when Robertson, Couch, etc committed), we had four more four stars in the same class, when we had five in the DECADE that contributed from 2000 to 2010, two of them JC's. We had ten four stars in one class in 2014, not sure if the coaches had anything to do with this but they are recruiting much better.

I don't personally like the uniforms that much, but with our status in college football I think you have to look for every edge you can get. If it could possibly appeal to recruits I'm okay with it. We don't have the history or name to demand attention. We laughed at UofL playing Thursday night games for years, but they did it because they couldn't command attention in the crowded Saturday schedule.

What high school football player picks a college based on if they like the uniform or not? None that I'm aware of.

Yea, but you forget that we're mass communicating, we're not one at a timing here.... You see, you used Pappy to make your point, and you just turned it against you... You mocked Pappy and didn't see anything wrong with it, so why should we care if they ripped us out of our squares and made it their own... I say we get it back Pappy and make it ours again... Shut up Jr, before I go home and kick your mamma.... You couldn't have come from my loins...

Sorry, but I never mocked Pappy.

Pappy is the only one who refused to follow the advice of his advisors to adopt his opponent's trademark (use a smaller midget) and had vision (mass communicating, partnering with the Soggy Bottom Boys) and staunchly refused to come off as a "Johnny-come-lately"

But unfortunately our branding "brain trust" appears loaded with Juniors and Pappy's advisors as they've chosen to seek a stumpier midget and is clearly absent of a visionary like a Pappy O'Daniel.

Instead of being Uniquely Kentucky (how's that for brand?) we've chosen to be UT, UB, UNI copycats. Maybe it's what NIKE has given us, but I think we deserve better and should demand better.

So I never mocked Pappy ... Our "brain trust" definitely but never Pappy.

Sorry

Since I obviously failed to make my point in my initial post ... Name some things that sets this program apart from all other programs ... Things that are Uniquely Kentucky.

It used to be that no matter how outmanned we were, by the end of the game our opponents knew they'ed been in a fight. Unfortunately we can't claim that anymore but hopefully we can reclaim that.

Beyond that I only see three things that make us unique ...

We play "My Old Kentucky Home" before the game,

We have the "Call to the Post",

And we can't beat Florida.

What else is there? What other things have I missed?
