Preseason All-American outfielder Tristan Pompey went 4-for-4 with two doubles and reached base five times on Sunday in Spartanburg, S.C., as Kentucky capped a perfect road trip to open the season with an 8-4 win over Evansville.
The No. 8 Wildcats (4-0) also got two hits from senior first baseman Troy Squires and the second home run of the young season from senior third baseman Luke Heyer to beat the Aces.
Junior college transfer Ryan Johnson belted a bases-loaded double in a four-run third inning that staked UK to an early 6-1 lead. Luke Becker and T.J. Collett also had hits for the Cats.
Kentucky starter Daniel Harper pitched four innings, allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out eight in his collegiate debut. The freshman right-hander from Kansas gave way to Aaron McGeorge (1-0) in the fifth, who claimed the win with 2.1 innings of work.
Alec Maley, Carson Coleman and Mason Hazelwood closed out the game with three innings of scoreless relief. The UK bullpen was solid all weekend, allowing only five earned runs in 15.1 innings of work.
Evansville starter David Ellis (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks during a brief, two-inning stint on the mound.
A 4-0 start is the first since 2012 for Kentucky, which began last season 0-4.
Pompey, a junior from Toronto, batted .471 and reached base 11 times during the Cats' four-game road trip.
The Cats return home to open the 50th and final season at Cliff Hagan Stadium on Wednesday afternoon against Xavier. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
