Reviews I see online are REALLY mixed for almost everything. My son is getting a ton of music related items: amp, bass, guitar, etc but does want a turntable. I’m looking to not break the bank but am seeing a lot to be concerned about for just about every review I read

3 choices for good affordable turntables IMO. Rega, Pro-Ject and Music Hall.

Just don't buy those cheaper suitcase looking ones. Bought one for my mom to be able to play her old records on when her record player stopped working but the sound quality was poor. Hooked it up to her stereo and it just had very weak bass sound. Probably would have been better off just buying an old used one at the flea market.

I'm not a huge audiophile, but I've always thought Audio-Technica has some very solid entry level turntables. If you can spare a few extra bucks, the LP120 is a good choice IMO.

Seconding this

Thirding this. Their value cartridges are also dope. I replaced a much more expensive AudioQuest with one when one of my kids broke the needle off. I actually like this better:

Audio-Technica AT-VM95E Dual Moving Magnet Turntable Cartridge Green

Guys is this the one?

My understanding is you need two of them and a microphone.

-i have the entry level fluance with onboard preamp...add powered speakers (we have Klipsch r41pm) and it's pretty much plug and play...not as sexy as a tube amp and towers, but suits our needs perfectly.

The speaker side of this I’ll have to get into next. Hoping with a pre-amp on board he might be able to use one of my speakers or even a guitar amp?

-speaker will have to be powered. You could prolly get adapter to 1/4" to use the guitar amp...but it won't sound good.

Sounds like I’m in on a speaker also. I do have a small one I could just give him since I could use it also

My grandpa left me his setup when he passed away. it is my most prized possession.

I have the Fluance RT1 as well - I have the pre-amp turned off and run it through my surround sound pioneer receiver - it sounds amazing and has excellent reviews.

It is a hard wood cabinet thus reducing vibration and comes with a very nice cartridge out of the box.

the cartridge is much more important than the turntable.

This one is probably the best bang for your buck, at just over 300 dollars

the AT VM cartridges (it comes with the 95) are big upgrade to the 95E

If you want to drop another 150 on an upgrade, replace the cart it comes with and upgrade to the AT-VM95ML

That cartridge represents the biggest leap in performance you're going to get.

I've got a record player/8 track home console deal from the mid 70s that was my parents. I need to get the record player repaired, it's ot belt driven. Who the hell in Lexington would service one of these old wooden deals?

I had an old console record player that belonged to my great grandparents that I overhauled myself. I found all the info I needed on the internet.

80- I'm currently working on a 60's era Magnavox wide cabinet "Hi-Fi" that I picked up for a song. It's amazing how many NOS parts are still around for that kind of stuff.

Not so much the turntable, but the cartridge is critical. Get the best one possible.
Maybe. In the last 10+ years I've owned several decks from rebuilt Pioneers and Garrards to brand-new, entry-level offerings from U-Turn and the latest from major manufacturers.

A noisy spindle bearing, a rough spindle or even a bad drive motor will negate any cartridge. I bought a brand-new Pro-Ject 2Xperience SB (with Bluepoint No2 cart) in about 2015 or so. SOunded great for a year, then the drive motor developed a vibration that translated thru the belt and into the platter where it was clearly audible. I replaced the motor and it did the same thing within about 6-8 months. I will likely never own anothe PJ deck... but their tube/hybrid phono preamps are some of the best I own.

I replaced that deck with a Rega Planar6 (P6) with Ania cart. Couldn't be happier with it. I stopped looking at nicer decks b/c I can't imagine it could get that much better for the exponential price increase from this mid-level player. It's that good. DEAD silent operation. My main concern with a Rega (and another thing to consider that a cart can't mask) was the lack of a grounding wire (Rega use the negative side of RCA interconnects for ground) and any ground loop/hum/noise issues that might cause in my system, but, luckily, it has never been an issue.

That said, if I were jumping in, I'd get a new Fluance for the $. Seems I read nothing but great things about them and the only negatives I remember reading about them was a speed control issue when they were first released, but that was quickly remedied.

Edit: ONe more thing to remember about Deck/Cart relationship is that the better the cart, the more it will expose and even magnify the inherent issues with the deck itself.

Fluster, have you fiddled around with/tried the solid acrylic platters? Do they help reduce any ambient noise, or are they just belt stretchers?

I've yet to find any of the newer tables that will work with my old Harmon-K tube receiver, they all sound like crap through it. It's early 60's The vintage Garrard table does fine with it though. Unfortunately, the mechanics are kind of jacked up right now, so I'm going to try and break it down and work out the kinks over the winter.

In my opinion vintage turntables are a good option in many cases. If you look at the specs on many vintage turntables they are superior to most entry level turntables, such as Fluance, Pro-ject, etc. The state of the art for turntable manufacturing was in the 1970s. In many respects, it has been downhill since then because of the drop in sales for vinyl records. If I were looking today, I would consider vintage Technics, Pioneer, Thorens, etc. Some are still expensive to buy, but in many cases are still better turntables than what you can buy today unless you want to spend quite a bit of money.

Dual, Garrard and Thorens were some of the biggest names in those daze as I recall with belt driven platters until about the late 70's. Many went direct drive after that.

All 3 made idler-drives as well. I have a Dual 1219 from 1973 that I love. Not quite in the class of Garrard and Thorens but still a wonderful turntable. Bought it several years ago from Magnetic Tape in Louisville.
