I have been separating my paper/cardboard, tin fans, aluminum cans for about three years now.

The small community that I live in doesn't have a recycling center that takes glass so I have just been keeping all of my glass (mostly bourbon bottles) in the garage until I find somewhere that will take them.

How many of yoU guys recycle consistently?

Is there anyway to recycle styrofoam?

We recycle fairly well, and have been for the last 5-6 years since the city initiated the policy. For us, the practice has become so commonplace, I feel something is terribly wrong if throwing bottles or cans in the trash during my various travels outside Austin. Many places are still behind the curve, as my brother's neighborhood in Orlando received blue recycle bins just this past November.

From an environmentally friendly perspective, styrofoam disposal remains a pain in the *** for our area. We have maybe 2 dedicated collection centers in the county.

I try to recycle metals first, and most cardboard and plastic just to do something other than send it to the landfill.

Read a while back that the two most recycled materials in the US aren't what you expect. They are asphalt pavement and car batteries. Both are over 99%.

We drink a lot of bottled water and take the empties to the center about once a month. That's about it.

We used to but moved and no longer do. I should probably look into it. We have Republic Services and I would assume they do but it was not given as an option when I signed up with them.

I keep all boxes and cardboard for burning in the fireplace or firepit out back. I have a designated are in our garage that is out of sight and stack the crap out of this so when winter rolls around the fire is always going at a good pace.

We live in Oregon, so we caught the bug the moment we got here from Philadelphia (8 years ago). Our local trash/recycling company provide us 3 containers...glass, trash and commingle recycling. Guess which one is the largest container of the 3...yep, the recycling container. It's about twice the size of the trash container they provide you. We also have a great recycling center in town for the larger items that don't fit in the container.

I've been recycling since I bought my first house in 1996. Our water & sewer bill includes a $5 recying fee. The city provides us a bin. Trash is a separate charge of $1.25/20 gal. You can buy an annual sticker for your big trash can (40 gal) $130/yr.

Basically, it is setup that you can save some $$ by recycling.

Also, since I live in Iowa, there is a $0.05 deposit on all soda and alcohol containers, so those get saved and returned.

Styrofoam is still a pita. Can't recycle, and it's bulky to put in the trash.

Yep. I do it religiously. Have Republic service. They provide a huge bin just like the trash bin. No sorting needed...just throw it all in the bin and sit by street.
Takes very little effort.
And to the original poster, styrofoam, while technically recyclable, is generally not accepted at most centers or presort bins.

Pretty much a modern day Captain Planet.

We have two separate curbside pickups & they gave us a recycling can. Net, easy to do. Our recycle volume too is bigger than the garbage volume by as much as 2-1. Paper, plastic, Al, metal cans, cardboard. That we get two paper newspapers daily favors the recycle volume. Disposal gets most organics - peels, egg shells, coffee grounds, etc.
