I recall there being discussion that this move might hurt Duke's recruiting even more, especially as Duke was "struggling" to get a good big man. Now that K's been coaching "too long," people are saying it's unfair. Laughable, but I'll be rooting to see K get his fifth gold in world competition to match his number of NCAA ships, more than Dean and Roy combined.

That is certainly a great point I like to make to my unc friends K has 5 and dean and Roy have 4 combined.

And three of those four should have an asterisk beside them because of the two decades of cheating.

Roy almost put himself and Dean into a tie with K, but oops, Kris Jenkins happened
I love when they say they were one ridiculous shot away from being a champion. No you were one away from OT and you conveniently forgot you hit a more ridiculous shot to even tie it to begin with.

And that KJ shot didn't strike me as "ridiculous;" not like he made it from half court. Just because Marcus Paige said his team would have won the 'ship had they gotten to overtime doesn't make it true, UNC faithful

But we have to be fair. Frank McQuire has one which makes it 5-5 and let us not forget the year 1924 and the never ever to win again Helms Trophy team led by that legendary coach Norman Shepard. OFC

Gotta admit it. I didn't like the decision at first. Roy had the AFAM Train rollin' full-steam and the holes won a natty. Fortunately , K saw the big picture. And , yeah , it's interesting how people ( unx fans in particular ) had no problem with K coaching Team USA back then. It was only AFTER he was insanely successful at it AND had the world's best players singing his praises that they started whining about it. Is it a recruiting advantage? Was it THEN? No one thought so at the time. Saw Cal on ESPN the other day. He doesn't think it is. K coaching Team USA sure hasn't hurt UK recruiting. If there's an advantage , that "advantage" was always there anyway. The "advantage" was K himself. K's the GOAT. Is what it is.

Paige's shot was certainly more "ridiculous" than Jenkins'.

As far as winning the game, I think most people would agree that we had all the momentum. If Jenkins shot doesn't fall, I think Nova would have seriously been in their own heads thinking, "how did we let this get away?". Paige's shot would have clearly been a moral booster for the whole team. And I personally think that Carolina was just a better team - we win 7 out of 10 games against Nova. So it certainly isn't guaranteed, but I think we were in the driver's seat if OT happens. But does it really matter? OT didn't happen and we were the victim of one of the most clutch shots in the history of the tournament. Bummer.

That Stephen a Smith segment was laughable: if Roy, Cal, or Boeheim were at the helm of the Olympic teams I bet the U.S. Would have found a way to not win at least one of those gold medals

Agreed. It's also laughable how no one seems to care about such things until Duke/K are perceived to benefit from it. It's never just a simple case of K being a great coach/recruiter. It's never just a simple case of players ( college AND pro! ) wanting to play for 'im. Salt. 24/7/ Salt.

I think that when he joined up as coach, we were struggling a bit in recruiting. Joining Team USA created a scapegoat for that.

I admit I was a little concerned with K's decision to become the Olympic coach. He was always the right man for the job, but I was a bit apprehensive that he was looking for challenges away from Duke. At the same time I was excited to see what would happen.

With hindsight being 20/20, what a great decision it ended up being.

I'm looking forward to these Olympics just like always and can't wait to see K wearing 12 gold medals again.

Refs would have handed the game to Nova in OT. Because as we know, the NCAA hates UNC and they would have never allowed them a fair chance at winning that game.

Except for the fact that Marcus double dribbled before the shot. But whatevs.
