I remember when Notre Dame hired Charlie Weis. I've never been a ND fan, but have several friends who are. I remember how excited they were when he came in. After seven games, they gave him a huge contract extension. Everyone was certain he was going to return the Irish to the promised land -- until they realized he couldn't coach. They are still paying him today.
There are some guys who thrive in the compartmentalized environment of a coordinator, but don't have the organizational, people, managerial skills to be a head coach. Unfortunately, I think everyone but the die-hard optimists realize that's where we are at today. When you are desperate for any semblance of success, people want to believe that this time will be different. But this is going to end for us the way it ended for Notre Dame -- only we probably won't find a Brian Kelly to ease the pain a bit.
