Should CMS replace Eliot in the off-season? Personally, I think he should. What say you all?

He apparently had a Power 5 DC offer this past off-season (what on earth was he thinking not accepting that?). I'm guessing he'll try to get a DC position at another school this off-season, but if he doesn't, he'll probably return and they will let his contract expire at the end of next season a la Steve Brown. They aren't going to pay him $500k not to coach next season.

Unlikely. While many here gig him don't forget he's also the OLB coach and Allen and Ware are coming along nicely as is Bonner. Get Laster back from injury and Kengera settled in, weight on Bannerman and that's a good looking group.

DJ is not going anywhere unless he decides to go. The thing about Stoops is that guys that have hung in there with him he's loyal to. Stoops will get DJ on the right page and he will be fine.

Surprised this comes up so much in discussion. Stoops is not going to get rid of Elliot period. They are close friends and Stoops likes working with him and thinks they just needed to adjust roles which seems to have worked out. Stoops doesn't run the defense by himself, he just took over most of the play calling while DJ was the scout and eye in the sky and helped game plan for him just like offensive coordinators have assistants that do the same for them. I think they like that arrangement and again is seemed to work. So there is nothing to replace unless DJ just decides to move on himself.

I highly doubt Stoops fires Eliot this off season they are too close. As long as Stoops keeps full control over the defense, then let him stay and keep working with the OLB's. They have played better once Stoops took over defense duties and Eliot was full time hands on with them. I just hope his recruiting picks up now.

I think we keep him and keep doing what works. Let Stoops call the plays and Dj spot him up in the booth. I mean we went 7-3 doing that... GO BIG BLUE!

Exactly, I had no problem having a really good DC in Stoops take a more hands-on approach calling plays and allow Elliot to assist.

Well he is a decent OLB coach no doubting that. If I remember right isn't that the same group he coached at Fl St? But the question is then.... Why is he getting a DC salary for being a OLB coach? He's not the best recruiter and he was terrible as a DC.
That's the predicament that Stoops is in along with him being your bud.
Are their other coaches around the country that are good OLB coaches who are also great DC's? I'm sure their are.

In effect, he already has displaced Eliot as the DC. The Eliot/Stoops combo appears to have value and the positions for which he serves as position coach are showing pretty well.

I would definitely not pay a buyout to him.

BTW, Little Kings and frisbee lately?

It would serve our defense well to have a DC that does not need a head coach to come in and take over play calling and organization. As we move up the ladder I expect we can bring in proven personnel. The ideal way to have this happen is "promote Eliot out of town". He can save face and UK can find a proven DC

I like this idea best. Let it go like it is next year then focus on getting a good D coordinator after next year. Maybe let Clink walk too and hire a LB coach and have Stoops work with the DBs.

I leave it up to Stoops to pick his staff but here is how the S&P+ has ranked Eliot's defenses since he has been here:

2013 - 98th
2014 - 54th
2015 - 80th
2016 - 84th

This is his 4th year and we have the 2nd worse defense in the SEC with only Missouri, 2 points lower at 86.

Bill Parcell's famous quote applies "you are what your record says you are".

It would be hard for me to keep someone with that kind of record but I'm just an outsider looking in.

As long as Gran/Hinshaw stick around on offense I think Stoops is comfortable enough with that side of the ball so he can spend more of his time directing the defense. We improved mightily (on both sides of the ball) once Stoops started paying more attention to defense.

If another program offer Eliot then I wouldn't be surprised to see him make the jump. But I don't think Stoops will push him out. There is some benefit to keeping the coaching staff together, for recruiting purposes and for team unity.

If the chemistry is good, which it appears to be, between Coach Stoops and Eliot, why rock the boat. If Eliot isn't pulling his weight as far as recruiting, then it's time for him to go. Let's see where we rank on defense in 2017, since we will have tried and true recruits of Coach Stoops.

Add a couple of defensive linemen who can play and we'll be just fine. So lets give it a rest. A coach becomes brilliant with the right players.

I'm fine retaining him as position coach, just think we're paying him too much to do too little. Of course, that's what I thought about CMS too!

Frisbee and Little Kings.. Man, those were the days. If only I knew then what I know now.. [cheers]

Sure didn't help elliott this year playing about ten first year players on defense. After replacing the entire front seven once they got a little experience played pretty well.

Btw Jordan jones covers a lot of mistakes.

It's a safe bet that nobody here knows what Stoops will do. I sure don't. Eliot is here because Stoops and Eliot are friends from their days at FSU. Stoops is loyal, but typically not to a point of bad program management. A big key to this season has been response of our defense to Stoops after he took it over in October. The moment Stoops took over our defense, he was basically acknowledging Eliot wasn't getting it done to his satisfaction. Anyone can see our offensive recruiting and talent evaluation have surpassed defensive recruiting/evaluation. So take that FWIW. Our coaching staff has underdone important changes this year. Matt House straightened out our special teams. Eddie Gran is managing offensive game planning and play calling independently. Stoops is personally handling our defense, with Eliot retaining the coordinator title but mainly coaching edge linebackers. Eventually, this must go 1 of 2 ways. Maybe Stoops is content to be the de facto defensive coordinator while holding the head coach title. Stoops could let his buddy Eliot keep his coordinator title/salary while mainly handling the linebackers and assisting Stoops. Eventually, this would divide alliances, especially on the offensive staff. The other alternative is that Stoops can grow as a true head coach. To do that, he must hire a defensive coordinator who can run the defense, evaluating and recruiting at a higher level than Eliot. I believe this is necessary in order for our football program to keep moving forward. Stoops must grow beyond his comfort zone and become a true head coach. I think this is the eventual outcome, but I have no idea if it will happen this year. To be clear, I think Stoops did what needed to be done this year, and deserves a lot of credit.

If he were going to be gone I believe it would already have happened. Jus t a reach, but I'm beginning to think Eliot doesn't translate his plans or ideas in a way the players comprehend. As for now, he relays what he sees and thinks and sees to Stoops and it gets translated to the players in a......perhaps....different manner.
