Respect for Woodson

In an age that allows athletes to get away with a lot of egregious behavior (rape, assault, etc.) Indiana coach Mike Woodson suspended 5 players, 2 starters. What other B1G coach would've done that? Of course it's out of the question for SEC coaches.

Concern about culture is always admirable

From the Indy Star
————————-
Citing “disciplinary reasons,” IU coach Mike Woodson announced near tipoff that he had suspended five players for the Hoosiers’ game Tuesday night at Northwestern.

Woodson confirmed his decision speaking with Don Fischer on Indiana’s pregame radio show. A program news release distributed at the same time confirmed the five players were guards Xavier Johnson, Parker Stewart, Khristian Lander and Tamar Bates, as well as center Michael Durr.

“When you don’t obey the rules,” Woodson told Fischer, “you’ve got to do things you don’t want to do.”

Per IU policy, if the players were being suspended for failed drug tests — underlining all those words — they could not dress out for this game and they are dressed out.

At some points in the history of this league, the sport was, in part, about teaching young men to become men. Hope our program can continue to be about that too.

I like Izzo as a coach but he's overlooked some terrible allegations against some of his players in the past.

I'm beginning to think it's about time Izzo hangs 'em up. He was going through his whole "we were soft and not ready to play" thing again this week after losing to Wisconsin. How many times have you heard that from him the last couple of years?

My observation is that Michigan State has been somewhat overrated this year and is getting beaten by better teams. After watching Northwestern's games against them, I'm not convinced they have much more talent than the Cats.

I absolutely think they have more talent than NU. But that talent isn't playing better. Is it possible Chris Collins coaches his kids up better than Izzo? Fans wanna know.......

Sorry, I've seen MSU play several times this season, and I'm not particularly impressed. They do have some young players and might get there. The schedule is catching up with them. Purdue and Illinois (when healthy) have considerably more raw talent.

Despite all of you guys not being impressed by them or their talent or whatever else, they are still 8-4 in B1G play this year, effectively 1 game back (technically 1.5, but 1 loss) of the 3-way tie at 10-3 between Purdue Wisconsin Illinois.

If they don't have a lot of talent, then Izzo is doing a heck of a coaching job to keep them winning games.

I agree they aren't a great squad this year, but I would love it if in our "down years" we could still win 2/3 of our B1G games. That's the sign of a good coach, IMO.

You guys are crazy if you don't think MSU has more talent than us. They are on a cold streak right now, but let's not get carried away. Where they rank in the conference may not be clear, but they are likely a Top 5 team in the BIG. For whatever reason, we always play MSU tough and we should enjoy that.

Personally I think MSU has:
1) Players with more potential
2) More athletic players overall
3) Not necessarily better players than us right now

MSU has benefitted from the easiest schedule of any team in the conference so far, things are about to pick up considerably for them after the game at home against IU. 4 of their next 6 are on the road, and the two home games are against Illinois and Purdue, so let's see if they're still winning 2/3 of their conference games at the end of the season.

Based on the starters for each team I would take Buie over Walker - Nance over Bingham - Brown over Beran - At this point in their careers and based on their current numbers i'm not sure I would take Christie over Audige, especially defensively. Roper and Hauser play different positions as MSU starts 2 guards and 3 forwards while NU starts 3 guards and 2 forwards. Basically, your point #3 is spot on.

One thing I would definitely take is Izzo over Collins.

Knight used to do it all the time. Blame the players, distract from your failures, and get respect from the IU fans because you're tough. Exactly what is happening back home in Indiana.
