No disrespect to the current player, so I won't call him out at all. But it is WRONG that the #8 wasn't retired when Lamar left.

No player did more for this program, up to and including winning the Heisman for this school. It's a no brainer.

Retire the number and build a statue. NOW

I'd argue that both BCS bowls were bigger for the program than Lamar's Heisman. Unfortunately Petrino's team management let us down during Jackson's 2 great seasons. We should have had double digit wins at least one of those years.

Patience. It will be retired someday but in the meantime there’s nothing wrong with other Cards wearing the number.

#8 will be retired eventually at UofL. Lamar Jackson has a potential HOF career to have at the next level first. :)

Of course I’d argue the Fiesta Bowl win over all of them. But hey, I’m old school.

Sugar bowl trumps the firsta bowl because UofL beat a 1 loss SEC team ranked #3 in the Country.

The Fiesta Bowl was important however the Cards beat a 7-4 Bama team, who were ranked #23.
Surprise Suprise that a 4 loss team is ranked.

The Fiesta Bowl was the win that started the transition to where we are now. Coach HS promised a greater future with a new stadium and we delivered. Team wasn’t just there to win, it was there to prove we belong and all things were possible. It was Alabama and I don’t care what their ranking or record was. The hammer fell and the score was loud and clear.

Just a matter of opinion and likely age difference.

Im 47.
I watched every game that season, including the back back blocks on San jose St FG try to win the game.
The next year UofL would go 2-9.

The UF UofL beat could have been in the Title game had they beat Georgia.

Agree, retire #8 - Lamar was a once in a lifetime “Michael Jordan” type football player.

I'm an old Timer. I'm 53 and remember when Bob Weber was HC, Pat Patterson was QB and you could get free tickets at Kroger. So Yeah, I've got a few years of being a fan on me.

What makes Lamar different than those big Bowl Wins (Sugar Bowl over Florida was biggest IMO), people tuned in to WATCH Lamar. in 2013 no one not a UofL fan tuned in to see "the team that beat Florida last year".

Lamar was like a Barry Sanders. You had no idea what he was going to do the next play, but you didn't want to miss it just in case.........

Yes, it is the only retired number in football.

It's funny, because he wasn't highly regarded coming out. He was drafted by the Steelers, but they cut him. Baltimore picked him up and the legend of Jonny U began. Of course his number was later retired here, but it wasn't retired for what he did here. It was retired because of what he did at Baltimore.

Plus he played 2 ways.

They didn’t have Rivals rankings back then :). That was just joke. Don’t wanna roil the crowd.

The San Jose State game was our tie that year.

And I do think that #8 should be honored as soon as possible, as should #5. And if after Lamar’s NFL career, his NFL achievements merit it, we should retire his number.

IMO there is no need to wait to retire Lamar’s number, no one should ever wear #8 again. He was that special.

It’ll happen in time. And I’m sure it will be an all-out-affair. He will be honored and justly so.

You need to give Penn State a little credit for the Fiesta Bowl. However, we did kick the snot out of the Tide that game. How sweet it was!
It was sweet. There’s a lot that went on during that trip. Tons of distractions, but once on the field, distractions faded and it was one team one goal! It put the trajectory in motion for the football program. The dream lives on.
