Statistically, they both had incredible years. Mayfield threw for over 4600 yards, 70% completions, with 43 TDs and 6 INTs. He rushed for 300 more yards and 5 TDs, plus caught 1 TD pass. Jackson passed for 3660 with 59% completions, 27 TDs and 10 INTs, also 1600 more rushing yards and 18 TDs.
So when you total all of that up, you end up with Mayfield having 4900 yards and 49 TDs, while Jackson had 5260 yards and 45 TDs. Spectacular numbers for both....
The tiebreaker in the Heisman usually is how their team did. Oklahoma won the Big XII and went to the college football playoffs, while we went 8-4 in the regular season after losing our last 3 games to end the previous season. Winning 8 of his last 15 games is what doomed Lamar, and it’s a testament to how much respect he was given that he finished in the top 3.

He's right, ya know. That underachieving Louisville squad lost the Heisman for Lamar that year.
