If Eliot would go 4-3 he may see some success. We don't have the personnel to play 3-4.

I'm definitely not saying Rick Minter was great but he did have a little success at UK despite getting no help whatsoever from the offense in 2011. They held a Georgia team that was killing people, and had beaten Auburn 45-7 the week before, to 19 pts and UGA scored a fairly late TD to get to 19 (in Athens). They held Ole Miss to 13 pts a couple of games earlier and then basically shutout Tenn (with the exception of one long flukey passing TD) but ended up winning 10-7. I realize Tenn offense was terrible but I don't think a DJ Eliot defense would have matched that effort.

Obviously, Rick Minter didn't have much of a sample size at UK but I think he did more with less than DJ Eliot has. I'd take him in a heartbeat over DJ at this point, I realize that isn't saying much though.

Totally agree...Minter didn't do a bad job with basically a few good LBers, Montavius Neloms and hardly anything else.

Plus he and Matt Roark were the reasons we stopped the UT streak...he isn't in the same ballpark as Elliott who isn't nearly as bad as Mike Major.

The defense has by far been the most disappointing part of the Stoops experiment. Modern football is trending more and more toward innovative offensive minds every year. We're never going to out-defense Georgia and Alabama, but there's no reason we can't go the way of Louisville, Oregon, North Carolina, etc and try to out score them in shootout fashion. A high octane offense with a just good enough defense is our most likely formula for success.

Quite frankly, it is hard for me to separate DC Eliot and HC Stoops on defense. I just cannot imagine Eliot and Stoops on "different pages" defensively. But here are the Total Defense numbers for Minter's years (2011 and 2012) and the Eliot/Stoops years...

2011: #60 386 YPG Median 386 YPG 0
2012: #71 417 YPG Median 406 YPG +11

2013: #96 439 YPG Median 407 YPG +32
2014: #69 408 YPG Median 403 YPG +5
2015: #59 397 YPG Median 402 YPG -5
2016: #111 559 YPG Median 388 YPG +171

Not much difference that I can see but a lot will depend on how the rest of the season plays out. FWIW, UK has 4 upcoming opponents that are currently ranked in the Top 40 in Total Offense (#34 AL, #32 GA, #13 Mizzou  and #1 UofL).

Peace

Eliot has more depth and talent than Minter had and his units are just as awful. At least Minter was a good DC back in the day. We haven't seen the first shred of evidence that Eliot will ever be decent.

Eliot was basically admiting today that their system is too complicated.

Minter was a good DC.

The talent level was AWFUL back then!!

At least Minter was high energy!!

I'd say that Major was the worst we ever had, but Eliot looks almost as bad and has more talent to work with.
