Sucks. He was actually a bit of a family friend. My family did a lot of work with his dealerships around the Albany area. Dude was WILD. Absolutely wild. But also had a genuine heart. Did a heck of a lot for the local charities.

Cool story: When him and my Dad were doing business together, probably back in the 90's, Billy was breaking him down. He's a tough buy for the TV/Radio business. So my Dad finally had enough, and as a plan ahead of time, threw a box of condoms and lube on the conference table and said "Billy, If you're gonna **** me, at least make it enjoyable!".. Billy stormed out. My Dad figured he blew the sale. Only for Billy to come back, and throw a box of magnum condoms on the table and reply "If you're gonna buy me condoms, at least make sure they fit". They become pretty good business friends ever since.

His ADS were a bit annoying. Just had to hear his own voice. Tampa radio got less noisy

Thank you for sharing this. That is a great story and I can picture it in my mind.

Living in SWFL we also heard his commercials constantly. I actually missed the guy! Lol. I got so used to hearing them for years it was weird when I didn’t. He did a lot of stuff for the children in Fort Myers and Cape Coral area. Sponsored ball teams contributing to organizations etc.

The funny thing about his ads.. is that while they were annoying, they stuck with you. Which is why pretty much everyone here knows about Billy. But that was his strategy. He said when he came into the Albany market that he was going to dominate the airwaves.. and he did. All those commercials you see are generally just one-takes, and he films them in mass. They cost little and he runs them as much as he can.

It's a great strategy, and something no one else, certainly not other car dealers, were doing.

I read before that he spent over a million dollars a month on advertising

Between all his locations? Surprised it's not more lol. He was easily one of my Dad's biggest clients for several years.

IiRC he used to rent out the majority Turning Stone Casino, a little outside of Syracuse, just for his Christmas party... this casino is like a 60 story building..
