This is a really tough one for me and many others. Hope he's already found GC in a studio above us somewhere.

Many of us “older guys” are at an inflection point in time where many of our musical heroes are going to pass in the near future. Truly a sad day with more sad days to come. So put on some Beach Boys today and smile because you were around for it!

2 of my favorites Jimmy Buffett and Brian Wilson combining on the song South America. Jimmy discussing about working with Brian Wilson and how much Brian and Beach Boys influenced him. RIP Jimmy and Brian.

Indeed, Rick Derringer, Sly Stone, and now Brian Wilson all in the past couple of weeks. We're in for a rough few years as the sounds of our youth pass on.

July 4, 1985, with a day off from the IKE and settling sail within a few days, Tgar drove up to DC for the last great massive concert on the Mall which culminated with The Beach Boys, Fire Works, a million people and a wild time. Joan Jett joined them for a song or two as did Jimmy Page. Getting back to Norfolk by 6 am to be on the flight deck for muster was a real accomplishment.

Not that there ever was a "replacement cycle" w/ musical talent over the years - though there sort of was at times (65-75) - but we're now so far removed from good music and truly talented musicians that there's nothing to replace.

Open your mind and expand your horizons! There's plenty of good music being made today by talented musicians; you just have to explore a bit.

Pet Sounds remains unexplainable. Given the time period and the technology available plus they were a surfer band, can't explain it.

RIP
I’ve yet to have somebody convince me it’s a good album. I’ve tried several times over the years to enjoy but I just done like it.

One of the things that always struck Tgar about The Beach Boys was that they presented more as a successful “ album band” vs a “live and in concert“ band until you see one of their shows. No frills, well crafted songs and just great music.

You may not enjoy or like it, but you can’t take away from the fact that it’s one of the most critically acclaimed albums ever released. Just ask the Beatles. They knew their stuff. There’s so much going on. BW at his best. He really showed his genius.

I won’t try to convince you. IMHO, The complexity of the arrangements is as though a time traveler from the future dropped into a California studio and possessed Wilson. Way ahead of his time and often cited by musicians as a work of genius. There’s a great documentary on the making of the album you may want to check out.
