Hall of Fame basketball coach Raveling dies at 88
George Raveling, a Hall of Fame basketball coach who played a role in Michael Jordan signing a landmark endorsement deal with Nike, has died. He was 88.
That’s crazy, most people would have sold that for sure. Impressive, it belongs in a museum. Most people probably know this but the most fascinating thing from Raveling's life is that he was the owner of MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech. He was as at the Lincoln Memorial that day and he and a couple of other athletes were spotted and asked if they would mind being security guards so they were near the stage. At the end of the speech, he asked King if he could have the notes of the speech, MLK said yes. He's been offered millions for it but gave it to Villaǹova a few years ago
Great guy, back in the 80's and 90's I coached a middle school team and wrote him on what drills he used to develop a post player, he sent me his book for free, and actually wrote me when the season was about over asking how things went.![]()
