87 year olds tend to die a lot. It’s kinda what they’re known for.

One of the great myths U of L fans try to tell is that he gave up the Miami job to come to U of L. While that is the next game he coached after leaving, he didn't leave for it. He left to take the Miami USFL team and they wound up folding before they ever played a game so he needed a job.

I'm pretty sure he was interested in the UK job at one point, but I'm not sure when, I think it might have been following Coach Curry's dismissal but I could be wrong. Whoever was the AD and passed over him obviously made an awful decision - Newton? I'm sure someone will clarify.

I think he could have. You have to understand just how bad they were before he got there. They were getting their butts kicked by the Murray States and Moreheads of the world.
Yes, I know. But he was able to build against a weak schedule with maybe 1 top team. Wins breed wins. don’t know if he could have done that against an SEC schedule. I would have liked to see him do it though.

I admired and respected the heck out of Coach Schnellenberger. Truly amazing accomplishments.

- Tide offensive coordinator for 1961, 1964 and 1965 National Championship teams. Recruited Joe Namath.
- OC on Miami Dolphins Super Bowl VII champion team.
- Turned Miami Hurricanes into perennial contenders during the 1980s. Won 1983 National Championship.
- Saved UofL football from oblivion. (unsure if a good thing or not [winking] )
- Transitioned Florida Atlantic from no football program at all to NCAA D-1 Sunbelt contenders.

Wow.

Heard he fell and had been hospitalized. I'm very saddened this day arrived. He'll always be a legend. RIP, coach. You were awesome.
