Former NU 1960s All-American Jim Burns, who played in the NBA and later had a distinguished career as a federal prosecutor in Chicago, passed away a few days ago. RIP.

met him a few times at the basketball games. He also used to go to the back stairwell at Ryan Field, with a very good friend of mine for an occasional smoke. Nice guy and was real sorry to hear about this.

Jim Burns was part of NU's nationally ranked #1 recruiting class. He was an excellent player and a great guy. Last time we got together was at the Outback Bowl. He used to pound me in pickup games at Patton

An amazing story of American opportunity and small town basketball. Two of my favorite heroes of youth from McLeansboro, IL in the early 1960s, Jerry Sloan and Jim Burns. Fortunate to have known them both. Legends. RIP.

In the late 90s, I took an undergrad neuroscience class that his wife, Marty Burns, taught in the Frances Searle Bldg. it was a great class. She was smart and very cool. It was around the time that her husband ran for governor.
