A terrible loss. Got to see him in concert last summer and will forever treasure the memory of hearing a few of his greatest songs live.

Some more Prine songwriting from 1971. At the same time the rest of the songwriting establishment was focused on the young hippie generation, John was telling us not to forget others. Seems like a pretty apt tune at a time when the elderly are the most vulnerable from the crisis now gripping our country.

A Bluegrass poet and one of my favorites of all time. Sucks!

Kind of funny how so many here identify him with Kentucky/bluegrass, considering the dude never lived in Ky ...he was actually from Chicago. And his music was never considered bluegrass either.

But, yeah, he did seem to have a bluegrass heart.

I wrote this in about ten minutes after multiple drinks, so don't be too critical. I just wanted to pay a little tribute to a great musician.

John's up in heaven and the Bluegrass is a deeper blue. The world in all it's chaos is a little bluer too. Johns probably telling God a story, making him laugh. Thanking him for a good life and an amazing craft. He's probably sipping a drink and talking to old friends. Telling them how some stupid little bug got'em in the end. I doubt that he's sour, I bet he ain't mad. I'm sure John knows he didn't do too bad. The angels got a good one. I don't know how they will get any work done. With John telling stories and singing funny songs. The worlds a little colder with John up there, but I'm sure John would tell us, live your best life and always show you care. That we only get one shot, so do it up right. Try to be good with all of your might. Our Bluegrass poet is in heaven now, but he left behind so many songs just to show us how. How to live and to love and don't forget to be kind. You expanded all our hearts along with our minds. RIP JOHN PRINE

His folks were both from Kentucky.
I'm not calling him a Bluegrass singer, but more of an honorary Bluegrass native with his parents being from here and him spending a lot of his youth here and his clear affinity for the Bluegrass state. I would consider him more of a folk singer along the lines of Bob Dylan. Trust me I know John Prine. I have been a fan since I was very young. Huge loss of a great storyteller and an amazing musician.

John’s parents, William and Verna Prine migrated from Paradise, Kentucky in 1934 to the Chicago suburb of Maywood in search of industrial work. There they settled and raised their four boys, but took annual trips back to Kentucky to visit family. John and his brothers grew up loving country music, the Grand Ol’ Opry, southern cooking.

No one could write about Muhlenberg county and not have an affinity for Kentucky the way he did.

One of the reasons, I borrowed a guitar and learned how to play it at age 40. Was dumb enough to think I could play like him. Can't play like John, but I can strum along and sing many of his songs.
Got to see him at the Palace. Yelled at him "You're all right John." The crowd cheered for him. He walked up to the microphone and said, "We're all all right." The crowd cheered louder. He wanted to include everyone!
His simple music and simple words that made you just think about life are so important. He is an icon and I would put him in the top 5 singer/songwriters. RIP John. I hope you have your cocktail of vodka and ginger ale, and your 9 mile long cigarette.

Saw Prine for the first time at the Ryman in 2018. Great show and eventually brings out Tyler Childers and Sturghill Simpson. Glad I took the opportunity to see him in concert. Rip John, you touched many souls with your songs.

First saw him live at the ryman in October 2013. Had front row seats for steve Earle and him. Hooked ever since. He had a charm about him that was unmatched. Saw him a dozen or so times. Saw him at Red Rocks.
