Back in the day Sunday morning on ESPN was the sports reporters.
Dick Schapp hosted and there was a rotation of 4 other reporters. Feinstein was in the rotation. To me, this was a good show. Not really political, just impact of sports on society.
I used to hate watch it. I liked Dick Shapp and later John Saunders but I couldn't stand Lupica or Bob Ryan or Jason Whitlock. some of the others they had on were ok Bill Rhoden and Feinstein were good. I remember him being a big fan of the Patriot League. Mitch Album was always pretty good.

If I remember correctly, John was a big fan of JVP. He once said his favorite college football teams were Columbia, Army, and Penn State. He tried on several occasions to get access to Joe to write a book but it never happened. He was really torn by the Sandusky scandal.

He proliferated the idea of Joe had to know.
The people inside Duke were torn on him. On one hand, he helped Duke build an improved image (at one time Duke basketball was the most hated team in sports) but on the other hand he often flouted his relationship with K. On balance, a great sportswriter who had an ego. RIP

He had an ego. He and John Thompson disliked each other and that leaked out into Feinstein’s books. That said, A Season on the Brink is a remarkable achievement.

Didn’t know that about JVP. Sad.

He was a truly great writer and consistently an interesting guest on TV and radio shows. Conversely, he was concept defining ill-mannered, egotistical jerk. Whether it was encounters with him in the DC area or encounters with volunteers at the US Open or other golf tournaments, the stories are the same - Feinstein treated other people like garbage, particularly those he saw as less than himself. That he, Knight, and Thompson didn't get did along is interesting; in many ways, they were a lot alike.

I had the privilege of working with Feinstein for about 5 years on his stints on TV with golf. I only wanted to talk college basketball with him and not golf. He was such a fountain of information and stories that he couldn't put in print. And yes, he came off as thinking he was the smartest guy in the room and that his opinion was superior to others. Curmudgeonly to the core but would also give you the time of day and engage conversation.
