Yes he and Bill Rohr before him both had the Cats in the thick of the Big Ten race and played and beat some real tough out of conference foes as well. That's a pretty good career record at NU.
So I was there for his last year. Any indication why he left? I do not recall unless it was part of Strotz's attempt to push us to Ivy. Agase followed about a year or two laterLarry had some very competitive teams at NU. Led the Big Ten in 1966-67 with two weeks to go before losing some tough games at the end. And that ironically was the last year NU would host the NCAA Mideast regional at McGaw. In other words, the team would have played at home for the right to advance to the Final Four, had they held on (32 team tourney then and BIG champion, their only representative, got a bye to 2nd round.) He recruited some really good players from the Chicago Public league before that pipeline dried up. Nice man, too. Glad to hear he had a great career after leaving Evanston.
I remember (sort of) a game against UCLA at the stadium. We were up by about 10 pts at half. We had about a 3rd string center in. But in the second half. Alcindor fouled out all of our bigs and it we went down.I was there for NU's best competitive stretch in men's BB from '66-'69. Larry Glass assembled teams with B1G level talent. NU had many players from the Chicago Public League and were competitive nationally . NU played Kentucky, Louisville, UCLA and others during that time span
NU '69 was a special team with Don Adams, Dale Kelly, Dan Davis, Stirling Burke, Jim Sarno, Terry Gamber and others. The team faded near the end of the season and Coach Glass resigned.
It was rumored , he said "If I could not win the B1G with this team, there has to be a change"
We played 3 centers(Sarno, Sutton, ?} against Alcindor and beat the S%&# out of him. We shot 28% in the first half , built a nice lead but then got "cold" in the second half and lostI remember (sort of) a game against UCLA at the stadium. We were up by about 10 pts at half. And I remember one of the all time great games ever played at McGaw. A double overtime loss tAdolf Rupp’s Kentucky who had Pat Riley, Louie Dampier and Bobby Tallent. Score was in excess of 100 by each team 66-67 season I believe
