When I hear Leon Spinks' name, the first thing that comes to mind is not the Ali fight. It's that great USA Olympic boxing team he starred on. Pounded on the supposedly unbeatable Russians.
Sugar Ray Leonard, Michael Spinks, Big John Tate. The 1976 team won 5 gold medals
He was missing the teeth before that fight, too. Ali didn’t knock them out.
That Olympic team was something, I had a date and told her it would be a while because Sugar Ray was going for the GOLD., not a happy little girl.

Hate to be “one of those”, but I was there that night. I lived in Northern Nevada. A friend’s brother worked at the old Hilton Hotel in Vegas and got us tickets. It was in a damn ballroom/convention hall! Late in the fight people were looking around and saying, “He could win this thing!” - and he did.
Very similar experience with the rematch when he lost to Ali. Probably should have turned the TV off and got down to business!
He was the best house guest that anybody could hope to have. I was his Caucasian.
