RIP. I'm not a Catholic, not a big news story to me. Really just making this so someone doesn't make a clickbait headline.

He probably should have been in the hospital rather than taking visitors. Having said that, as a recent convert to Catholicism, I am sure it was a very special meeting for Vance.

Considering the Pope’s message to him I seriously doubt it.

Vance practices a very extremist version of Catholicism that is distinctly American and takes a lot, ironically, from the Calvinist tradition that runs through American Christianity.

Oh, I'm sure. Any meeting where Vance gets TV time and media attention is very special for him.
He is the VP of the US. He is going to be covered regardless of what he is doing. As a Catholic, it is the highest honor to meet the Pope. I doubt the Cameras had an influence. When you look at everything a person or people do with hatred, you are the problem, not them.

And the Pope told him the policies he supported were wrong and against the teachings of his faith basically.

Whatever your political leanings are it’s hard to dismiss when the leader of your church says you are in the wrong

Seems like several others found is amusing. Maybe you should learn to take a joke like them!
It wasn't funny. I'm not catholic, but find these types of global events pretty interesting. You are the type of person to interject politics into everything. I mean, it wasn't even clever, or witty. It was a weak, pointless political barb. And before you assume anything, I'm Libertarian and think both parties suck. Only thing worse than our politics, is the people that can't think outside politics, even for a moment.

Also, you and I have a difference in the the meaning of the word "several". You found a couple of like minded individuals.

You LITERALLY injected politics into a non political thread. Out of the blue, for no reason. (Other than you just can't help yourself). You did that.

I won't waste anymore time with you. Good day.
Ehh, Francis wasn't exactly shy about making political statements himself and did just pretty strongly admonish this current administration. He called basically the #1 domestic policy of this administration a "disgrace" and a "grave sin". He could be a fairly political figure at times, so it's not exactly a surprise someone made a political comment.

And the original comment was more of a joke anyway, I'm sure if this happened two years ago and one of the last people he met was Harris there would have been a lot more similar jokes about it on this board given how it leans politically. Besides, I thought Musk saved comedy and we could say whatever we wanted now?

The way I read it, the pope didn't see JD. He sent his second to visit with Vance. The article said the pope was weak and should have been in the hospital.

Death is a part of life. Anything that lives will die. It is inevitable. Hate to see it but it will happen to us all. The thing I have never understood about the Catholic Faith is that you can basically be and do whatever you want as long as you go confess your sins and ask for forgiveness. Then it is all ok. Why not just pray to God and ask for forgiveness?

Also, I do not understand how a faith can change their beliefs on issues that a lot of the faith was built upon. Catholics used to strongly believe that birth control, abortion etc. was flat out wrong. They also taught that Homosexuality, Transgender etc. was wrong. Seems like instead of sticking to their faith they are allowing it to evolve to stay relevant and mainstream. If that is the case, then it is not a religion and more of just a social cult or as most things are a business that is driven off of money or offerings.

The whole process of having to baptize a baby makes no sense to me. A baby is the most innocent pure person on earth, and they have not developed a thought process to choose if they want to be baptized or not. Don't you think it would mean a whole lot more to God that someone chose to be baptized as a young adult or adult and was of sound mind to do so? Again, not a criticism of the faith just things I have always questioned.

The OP simply started this thread as a tribute to a world leader of a major religion. Some have made this political. Others now want to debate beliefs. This message board was not intended for either of these. Can we simply close this thread and get back to basketball. We can debate politics and religion elsewhere.

The Pope was a man like anyone else, God will judge him like anyone else, I hope he was right with Jesus, the Bible says Jesus is the way, the truth and life.
Slight correction but I believe God says he will judges those of us who choose to teach to a greater strictness.

He was the spiritual leader of hundreds of millions of people and had a direct effect on the society and political landscapes of the world. Not to mention the historical significance of the office of the Pope and the Holy See.

I don’t think it’s a reach that a discussion on his death would touch on those subjects
