Longtime Cubs star, Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg dies after cancer battle
Ryne Sandberg was diagnosed with cancer twice in 2024.
Thanks for sharing. Always hard when a hero passes. I cried my eyes out when 7 retired. When I was 8 I bought my first packs of baseball cards(1989 Topps)and that’s about when my obsession with all things Cubs/Ryne Sandberg began. I was about 10 when he hit 40 HRs annd won the HR derby, and about 13-14 when he crushed me by retiring(the first time). I didn’t get WGN so when the Cubs played the Mets, Braves, Phillies, or Pirates and I had a chance to watch him live, I was glued to the television. In short, I idolized Sandberg.
Losing your childhood idol is strangely sad. I’ve never met the guy yet I find myself reliving my sandlot years and mourning the loss of a guy that inspired a kid’s dream.
apba baseball. remember it well. my guy was the mick. since each new year's cards didn't include rookies, my brothers and i would fish out old cards we thought most represented the rookies and pasted new names on the old cards. dems were the days. remember getting 2 gift tix to a phils game mid 50s. sat in a box for game against s.f. beside us was the most beautiful girl i'd ever seen(early teens). turned out she was olrlando cepeda's girl friend......not his wife. you know, a girl in every port10 times off an "A" pitcher in 84
One of the rare single column (indication of power) 2nd Baseman cards in a while leading up to 1984 most 2bman were always double columns indicating more avg than power
an 11 and 2 10's ( 51-10 not usual) signifying his speed surprised 44 wasnt a 7 when these came out

Ah, APBA. (I had no idea wtf all those numbers meant but, y’know, someone always comes along who explains.)apba baseball. remember it well. my guy was the mick. since each new year's cards didn't include rookies, my brothers and i would fish out old cards we thought most represented the rookies and pasted new names on the old cards. dems were the days. remember getting 2 gift tix to a phils game mid 50s. sat in a box for game against s.f. beside us was the most beautiful girl i'd ever seen(early teens). turned out she was olrlando cepeda's girl friend......not his wife. you know, a girl in every port.
Also, about the girl in every port thing. Len Barker was a year ahead of me in high school and, being that Ball Four had only recently been published, someone on our high school newspaper asked him about the Baseball Annies. “You have no idea.”apba baseball. remember it well. my guy was the mick. since each new year's cards didn't include rookies, my brothers and i would fish out old cards we thought most represented the rookies and pasted new names on the old cards. dems were the days. remember getting 2 gift tix to a phils game mid 50s. sat in a box for game against s.f. beside us was the most beautiful girl i'd ever seen(early teens). turned out she was olrlando cepeda's girl friend......not his wife. you know, a girl in every port.

We’ve always been successful with the ladies.Neshaminy product
Met Len at a Columbus Clippers game once. Folks around us were very puzzled as we started talking about our high schools (as I went to the neighboring Tennent and my sister dated a guy from Neshaminy). Also, about the girl in every port thing. Also kinda met Sandberg--was in line for an autograph at another Clippers game and a kid pushed his way in front of me at the last second. And that was the last autograph he gave that day (as he was getting his starter ready).
yeah became such a habit as a kid and played so many games--- i can still tell you what the standard output for most of the situations are Red numbers are the results of the Black numbers Die roll---- 1 homerun any situation 2 usually triple 4-5-6 usally doubles but with men on base become more... like man on first 5 is homerun but man on third 6 is homerun. 7-8-9 are singles based on type of pitcher baseline pitcher grade C 7-8s are hits grade B 7-9 are hits grade A 7s only. people like Koufax or Carlton in their best years would have two grades Like A&C making 7's outs in certain situations 10-11 singles and stolen base outcomes 12 double play 13's are K's 14s are BB's the range of 15 to like 23 were weird scenario numbers errors, injury plays, 24-25 almost always a double play and 27 29 double plays but were strikeouts with pitchers with control rating of X like Koufax. 26 always a Fiedler choice somewhere 30 a play to left field dependent on fielder rating 31 to CF 32 to RF 33-34 ground balls but K's if you have a Y control rating. 35 pop out to catcher 36 ball 37 strike 38-41 weirrd pitch outcomes wild pitches catcher errors 42 hit by pitchAh, APBA. "James, I don’t know how else to put this, but it just happens to be an unalterable fact that I am incapable of being wrong.”Almost exponentially?
