I realize I am late to the game on him, but I just downloaded a bunch of his stuff and am pretty pissed at myself for not discovering him earlier. Great Americana writer/performer. Authentic. A shame he and others of his talent toil in relative obscurity while packaged fluff of very limited talent is world famous and rich beyond belief.

Anyway...back to my point..anybody else here a fan?

I rarely listen to him, but I have seen him live twice and they were both great shows.

I enjoy his music but always kind of forget about him.

REK is my second favorite modern artist behind Steve Earle.

I could listen to the "Best" album on constant repeat.

GYERO country outlaw wildcatadam6 has been REK's biggest fan since late 2013, he's probably a great resource for you in this type of music.

I'm sure he'll chime in shortly.

I would probably rank him in the top 10 of current Texas singer-songwriters, but not top 5. Which says more about the depth of Texas artists than it does about Robert Earl. Currently I would go with:

James McMurtry
Ray Wylie Hubbard
Hayes Carll
Steve Earle
Ryan Bingham

If you want to talk all-time, then you would have to put Guy Clark, Willie, Billy Joe Shaver and Townes Van Zant ahead of him, and maybe some others as well. There have just been an amazing amount of great singer-songwriters to come out of Texas over the years.

I like all those guys, especially Hayes Carll..wish he would put out another CD soon.
A bit disappointed with Ryan Bingham though. His latest CD that just came out is OK...better than his previous 2....but nowhere close to his first 2 imo

Garden and Gun did a neat interview with him. He likes to be pretty reclusive, so interviews are hard to come by.
Just another great Texas artist that never went mainstream.

Love REK, and since discovering him, started listening to Charlie Robson and a little Dwight Yoakum. Some really good stuff.

me and a buddy saw him once. We got a cig from some guy named sleepy John....remember being real hungry afterward....kinda thirsty, too. Anyway, got to the concert in time to hear "the road goes on forever but the party never ends".

As for Ryan Bingham...I got his new cd that just came out. Its just ok.... a bit better than his previous 2, I think, but not nearly as good as his first 2, imo

He's fantastic, and an all-time great in the Texas country music scene. They actually have sort of their own "brand" of country music there, and it's awesome. I love a lot of the stuff on the radio, too, but what you'll generally find on the Texas country music scene....

- people write their own music
- they play their own instruments
- they are fantastic live
- they have actual musical talent

Also, most of it has a more "traditional" country music sound, if that's your preference. Tons of artists like REK to check out, and here's a good place to start...

My favorite right now is Ryan Bingham, and I'm going to see him in a month. Outstanding stuff.

He's not Texas, but along the same lines...

I'm seeing John Prine when he comes to Lexington in June and I couldn't be more excited about it.

Steve Earle is doing a couple of Nashville shows in early March and I would love to try and catch one of them as well.

Saw him quite a few years ago and thought he was okay but not really my cup of tea. Appreciate his ability to write songs, though. Knew immediately he'd never be 'big' as his music is impossible to pigeonhole into one specific market/genre (it's a good thing, imo).

Listening to him, though, did get me interested in TX Country and now I really like Reckless Kelly, Mickey and the Motorcars, Randy Rogers, Roger Creager, Two Tons of Steel (awesome live band and helluva lot of fun to dance to), Pat Green and several others. So, I gotta give him props for that.

John Prine, Chris Knight and Sturgill Simpson are honorary Texas. All of them are huge out here. Chris Knight is in Fort Worth tonight.

I like his songs, but I'm not that into his voice. I respect him and all the other guys still making real country music.
If your talking Alt country/Americana, You can't beat Chris Knight, Sturge, Dwight Yoakam's acoustic album, Hank 3, Lucero, Ryan Bingham, Shovel and Rope, or Jason Isbell. Good stuff.

Big fan. Have seen him twice and plan on seeing him at the Bijou in Knoxville next month.

Also really like Simpson, Hayes Carll, Bingham and the like.

Have been on a Shakey Graves and The Wood Brothers kick lately.
