I appreciate that effort but I generally reject WAR as as a true metric. There is no set equation, every service seems to use their own, not to mention, arbitrary and speculative assumptions have to be made which ruins any metrics value. For instance, you come up with a higher WAR for your starting pitchers but I have 3 in the top 15 ever. Easily. Fergie is usually placed in the top 25-30. There is no valid metric that should be able to value your pitching over mine.

This battle, in my opinion, is the classic batting cs pitching duel. I say pitching wins over time

Satchel Paige is such a wild card though. Obviously he was drafted for what he was in the negro league rather than MLB. His WAR in his prime would have been WAY higher than 3.5 and wood have tipped the WAR in your opponent’s favor and made it 2 & 2 in the categories. Still a super close matchup either way.

True but WAR has bigger issues. It isnt much liked by Bill James either, who is the father of modern baseball analysis. No matter how you define it, it is a conjured number lacking a basis in reality. The people who came up with it suggest to not use it as a stand-alone yardstick. It seems most useful within a team and that would make sense given the equations used.

I feel a little better but I'm pretty worn down. I'll just do a brief position by position analysis. I think I have the better team but I dont mind losing, @csrupp has a good squad. Just please dont base it on WAR.

1st base: basically a push. Carew had a better glove and was a better hitter, Foxx had a lot more power.

2nd base: My guy is a solid HOFer but Morgan is better.

3rd base: Brett takes this one. The only advantage Thome had was power but he was dangerously close to being a defensive liability. Brett was an all around great baseball player.

SS: Arky takes this one. He was solid defensively and was one of the best hitting SS ever.

Catcher: Slight edge to Piazza. Fisk was better defensively but Piazza was significantly better on offense.

RF: I'll give the edge to Ott. He was better, not hugely, but better all around.

CF: Mantle wins this.

LF: Rickey Henderson was the best lead off man in baseball history. He had a good glove and once on base he was a nightmare. Think about this. A l layer could come to the majors now, steal 70 bases per year for 20 years and still not catch Henderson. On top of that, Shoeless Joe is forever tainted.

Pitching staff: My pitchers are significantly better than @csrupps. When your ace is Seaver, compared to Walter Johnson, you're starting off in a bad spot. The benefit of a superior pitching staff is taming much of your opponent's batting prowess. My staff would absolutely do that as evidenced by what Walter did to the Babe. I'll stick with my opinion here, this competition is determined by pitching.

Bench: My bench is better. Richie, as mentioned during round 1, is probably better than Winfield. Heilman and Santos are HOFers who should have been drafted as starters. My bench is fantastic.

Once the dust settles over 7 games, i should win but it would be hotly contested. Walter Johnson pitching in 3 games, which would be perfectly normal for him, pushes me over the top.

Thanks for reading and voting, regardless of the outcome.
