Said it before, UK needs to go the Hal Mumme route again.

For as much disdain as I have for C.M. Newton, I've always believed he had the right idea but the wrong guy when he hired Hal Mumme.

Kentucky needs to find that young cocky coach in the lower levels of college football who does something different.

Unless UK can bring in a veteran older coach like a Tressel, scour the nation for some young coach who wants to be the one to bring down Saban.

Don't think it's a coincidence the last time we played in a New Year's Day bowl was under Mumme.

Newton should've hired David Cutcliff at the time and we wouldn't be having this discussion. But that's for another time, back to the current humiliation.

If you set out to hire the next Hal Mumme, you're doing it wrong. Radically wrong.

Isn't that kind of what we have now?
Good offense... Zero Defense.... New facilities

We need to hire a F'ing defensive coordinator!

Jeff Brohm is who we need to go after. He's relatively young, highly capable and also attainable.
This. Tired of UK making the same mistakes over and over again with its HC hires. UK is not going to lure a top level HC to leave a bigtime program to come here. They have to get an up and comer who has a proven resume of winning at a lesser program who has the fire and ability to come to KY and turn this around.

The "fire" part is easy.

It's useless with a head coach who's a moron

Need a competent head coach first then a def coord

Absolutely. Anybody delusional enough to think we can line up and beat SEC teams with 5 star linemen in a traditional attack needs to be removed as far as possible from the program.

I also think we should go completely non traditional on defense. Play 6 LB types and only have one down linemen. Play with 0 down linemen. Attack opponent's run game with speed, because we will absolutely never do it with strength.

I just think it has to be a person who has run a football program before ...no more coordinators with training wheels...preferably it would be a coach with some success at the power 5 level.

With our recent investment in facilities I think we would all be surprised with who we can get especially if we overpay ....5 mil for the head coach and 1 mil for the coordinators. I feel that you are going to have to make that initial investment to get people in here that know what they are doing and get some wins. Once the program gets a few wins, some upsets before you know it you have a winning program that is competitive with anyone in the SEC. This is not nearly as tough as the administration at UK has shown it to be the last 50 years

I agree with this premise and have said so in the past.

We are handcuffed in a lot ways in Kentucky. That has been discussed many times on here. We can't win consistently trying to play in a traditional way. Mumme had the right idea and brought us exciting football at times...even a New Year's Day Bowl against Penn State. He was just too radical about offense and no defense.

We have tried the traditional approach since Bear left and what has it gotten us? Remember Einstein's definition of insanity?

No one who's a real up and comer or doesn't have a some sort of baggage is going to want this job and on the off-chance we did luck into someone, they wouldn't stay long enough to make a difference. We had the opportunity to hire Petrino, we didn't, we passed on Leach. Jeff Brohm keeps it up another year or two, he'll have a better offer than UK.
I don't even think unorthodox coaching will make a difference at this point. I think you either go out and hire Jim Tressel or Art Briles who have long-term proven track records managing programs, accept their baggage and monitor them carefully or you really think outside the box and leave the SEC and go to the Big 10, ACC, or Big 12 where we have a shot at being competitive annually and having a couple of Top 20 recruiting classes would put us in position to make noise.
