Gunnar Hoak's senior film was released recently and I've got to say that the kid looks really good on tape. Obviously it just shows the good but even with that you can tell he's capable of making a ton of plays on the run, keeping it on the ground as well as extending plays. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this kid ends up as a starter in the SEC one day.

You can tell he doesn't have much faith in his OL because he throws off his back foot a lot. He does appear to have good arm strength though.

Very impressed. He knows the value of his progressions, particularly when the ball could be fit into a long bad spot for a big gain or to an intermediate/short throw for the sure gain. He has the potential to be a solid QB for us.

I hope we recruited him with that in mind.

Yes because I don't think we can win with Phillips at QB if Barker gets hurt. If Barker gets hurt then Stoops will be fired next year. Simple as that.

I know someone who was around his high school program and he says he is overrated. I hope he's wrong, but I thought it was strange for him to say that about his own quarterback. Mac Jones looks better on tape than 95% of high school quarterbacks I've seen. Hoak has pretty good looking tape, but there is something about Mac Jones that makes me think he's going to be our future starter, if his commitment holds up. I could be completely wrong, but compare their tape.

And to be fair on the other side I've read a lot comments by osu fans that thought he was the best qb in Ohio this year.

You are right about that. Some time with a QB coach would probably do him wonders.

Yeah, I also don't see what is so bad about him. Granted, I've only seen his highlight film, but he looks like a pretty solid all around QB to me.

I hope we are looking at a Juco or 5th year transfer if for nothing else, depth purposes. It's scary to go into a season with only 3 scholly QB's.

I agree that is not at all knock on Hoak or Barker. UK does need more depth & maturity @ QB than Barker (RS Soph), Phillips (almost no game experience) & Hoak (true FR).

Hoak is 6"4 good Arm solid accuracy. He has a frame to pack on weight as well. I wonder what the chances gran brings Gunnar Hiel as a 5th year senior? He stayed home for bowl game. Plus Cincy loses a bunch of production at wr.

Is this "someone" who actually has the football knowledge to know what he is talking about? Depending on sources, Hoak is either the 2nd or 3rd highest ranked quarterback in Ohio's graduating class this year. I haven't seen him play, but "someone" who ranks Ohio prospects thinks he is pretty good. I hope so, because with Dawson gone I will be surprised if his handpicked quarterback Mac Jones makes it to Kentucky.

His OL sucks bad. He throws a wobbly looking ball. Doesn't seem to have much zip on the ball.

Yes, very good knowledge. I desperately hope he is wrong, though, especially since Phillips is now transferring. I'm just passing on info from someone who has seen every game he's played and not just highlight tapes like all of us and the "experts."

If he proves to be Barkers equal in workouts does Stoops start him over Barker, as a true freshman?

Mac Jones does look really good in his highlights video. I am looking forward to seeing what he and Hoak can do. Go Cats!!

I remember seeing post exactly like this about Hartline.

Give me a smart QB over arm strength every time.
Granted you want both skills, but it starts between the ears.

I think the next good QB from UK will come out of the blue.
Some unexpected 2/3 star that surprises all of us.

Look at the NFL, QB's from small schools that started out 2/3 stars.

Can we even win with Barker? Other than a strong arm, I've seen nothing to suggest he can win SEC games.

And you come to that conclusion after 2 games? With a mediocre OLine (being nice) and no previous experience under his belt?

I saw one clear indication that Barker could very well get the job done: his TD pass to Timmons was a PERFECT throw..something PT couldn't always do

Better than your conclusion based on one pass.......SMH.

Then I will just say this. People who evaluate college football prospects in Ohio think Hoak is 1 of the top quarterbacks coming out of their state this year. But Hoak needs development. He has a long body, good leadership skills, and an accurate arm. But he is a fringe top 50 prospect in Ohio. Spring practice will help him, but he needs a redshirt. His arm strength will get better as he fills out. Hoak was offered a scholarship after Shannon Dawson picked him off the recruiting board when Kendall decided to commit to Oklahoma. Dawson is gone now, so Hoak will be playing for an offensive coordinator who did not recruit him. Hoak can become a productive college quarterback in a couple of years, but he will not be ready in 2016.

Correction, if Gran is the next OC, he recruited Hoak while at UC.

That's true, as far as it goes. Gran recruited Hoak for Cincinnati, an AAC program. But Gran didn't recruit Hoak for Kentucky, an SEC program. If Gran had been Kentucky's offensive coordinator at the time, we don't know where Hoak would have been rated on Gran's list of quarterback prospects for Kentucky under those circumstances. I assume you will agree that is a significant difference and an important unknown. So while Hoak has a good chance to be a productive player at Kentucky eventually, I think he will need several years of development before he is ready. The quarterback position has become a problem for Stoops, and Hoak won't be an immediate solution. Unless another quarterback transfers to Kentucky, Stoops has staked his job security to Barker. We all know Barker has talent. But I saw Barker play in November. At this early point in his career, Barker isn't ready. Although I trust Barker will make steady progress, the Louisville game was 1 of the poorest performances I have seen from a Kentucky quarterback in a long time. People can say whatever they want about Stoops, but Stoops isn't stupid. He knows he has a quarterback problem now. Although there hasn't been any smoke yet, I won't be surprised if something develops in the next month to bring in another quarterback. Not predicting it will happen, but I expect it's being looked into. If it isn't, then Stoops will bring more trouble onto himself.
