Screen protectors for devices..

What do you use? Do you keep your device protected or go raw?

Just grabbed the new S7 Edge, and really struggling to find quality tempered glass for it. The film covers don't work too well with the curved screen and the case already started to push the screen up. My mom got the S7 regular, and they have some options for glass protectors, but when it came today, it was too small. It was cheap and wasn't a big company, so I guess you get what you pay for..

But this whole industry really don't seem to have a good handle on this, especially with curved screens becoming popular. And I'm not even mentioning how much of a PITA these are to put on. I've done over 100 for work, and close to half don't come out perfect. Even Bestbuy/Verizon aren't too great at installing them. I'm wondering if just scrapping the protector is a better option: Most of these screens are very durable now, but I wonder how much it costs to replace them. Anyone go that route?

I like getting the tempered glass ones. I can't imagine a tempered glass screen protector working on a curved screen, those things shatter if bent enough. The curve on the edge isn't enough to break the screen protector, but my educated guess is that it would compromise the strength of the screen protector, which kinda defeats the purpose of having a screen protector.

Alas, unless you have a problem with screen scratches, a screen protector is useless if you have a quality, shock absorbing case as the majority of shattered screens come from drops.

See while I agree about a good case (I always use one but I go for the slimmest profile one, never the big ones), the edge does leave the screen kind of vulnerable to drops. There are now two edges that could get hit, even with a case. Where before, there wasn't.. You'd have to hit the screen dead on to damage it.. Which is very unlikely.

18 months of no screen protector and a medium protection case. No noticeable scratches and no damage from a couple of drops.

If you are dumb enough to buy a gimmicky screen like the edge or a curved screen, you deserve to have it break, imo.

I also got the S7 Edge last Tuesday. I got the Zagg screen protector that Verizon sells with the phone. It has a lifetime warranty, and they did a good job putting it on. I also got a thin low profile case. Normally I get these online from a third party, but Verizon had them on this occasion. I upgraded from the S5 and was happy the brought back the MicroSD card for extra storage.

Currently running the LG V10 in the Raw! No problems what so ever, but it is supposed to be military spec'd so I would expect it to be a hardy device.

I've had an iPhone for 7 year and have never used a screen protector, I do currently have a cracked screen but that's because I dropped it perfectly on the corner and bent the frame. A screen protector wouldn't have save that.

I think I got the same thing. My S7 Edge came in before they even had a lot of cases or protectors. Bestbuy actually had nothing yet. Is your Zagg the film style? That's what I got but the case I have pushed it back. Not to mention, even though it's clear, I hate seeing the weird film lines in the glare. I used to love the HD Film screens, but once you go to an actual clear glass screen, it's hard to go back.

Tempted to just raw-dog it and see how it goes...

Has anyone had to get a screen repaired? Depending on the price, I wonder if it's better to roll the dice. One screen repair on a 2-year phone might be worth it.

I'm not sure what mine is. The box says "Invisible Shield hd dry". It cost $30. I had it put on the instant I bought the phone so I can't compare with and without, but it looks great to me. I don't see the film lines you're refering to, but maybe my eyes aren't that great.

What scares you guys about the "raw" screen?

I've had an iPhone since the 3G and have only had one nick show up on a 4S that I used for 3+ years.

The screen protectors always look bad and are just a cash grab/fake incentive at the point of purchase, imo.

Maybe, but I've rolled out and worked on hundreds of iPhones..and I've seen plenty that looked like they went through the woodshed. All 4 and 5 models.. Maybe iPhone 6s and newer Samsungs have better quality glass? But I thought it was all the same glass over the last few years.

My wife has an S5 and the glass with whatever the touch thing is costs $150, just for the parts. Her case offers no protection whatsoever but it is super cute, and she's only destroyed two screens so she's just fine with that.

A few guys at work have them.

I think adding a pane of glass to protect a pane of glass will always looks bad.

If you are "in the field" with sand and dirt potentially scratching your screen, I can understand a need for beefy screen protection (maybe) and cases.

But for normal "indoor" routines, the gorilla glass (and Apple's equivalent) are more than adequate.

Like I said, it is just a cash grab/ fake incentive for the retailer to make easy money. It's like buying the $3 warranty on $5 earbuds at Best Buy. A "sucker's bet," if you will. For suckers.
