I was in CVS the other day and saw a magazine that had top 10 lists for the SEC. It had top 10 lists for every position, plus list for best games, best teams, best coaches, etc. I knew we would be low or not present on many of those lists because of the history and tradition of much of the SEC, but I was really surprised at a couple of exclusions.

Tim Couch was not listed as one of the top 10 QB's. Yet Cam Newton was listed as the 2nd or 3rd best in history. Couch belonged on that list.

Craig Yeast was not on the top 10 wide receivers list. Yet at one point at least he was the SEC's all time leading reciever wasn't he? He belonged in that list.

who did make the lists.
James Whalen was number 10 I think for tight ends. And Jacob Tamme made a best of the rest list in the back.

Art Still made the list at DE. as he should have. And I believe Steve Meilinger was on one of the lists. I'll have to go back to the store and look.

Is there a link? I would be curious to read those lists. The list of RBs alone could start a huge argument: Herschel, Bo Jackson, Emmitt Smith off the top of my head, Darren McFadden too. SEC has had some amazing RBs.

I can't find a link to it, I think it was put out by lindys or Athlon, one of those type publications. It was a special edition thing, ok to stand in the aisle and browse through, not worth the 10-12 bucks they wanted for it.

Hershel and Bo were obvious 1-2 in RB rankings, other names I recall were Emmit Smith, McFadden, Kevin Faulk....

Have not seen the list but can't imagine any DE ranked ahead of Still and Reggie White.

I would say Cam Newton is one of the BEST players to ever play in the SEC. I'd take him over Bo or Tewbow

Tim couch was a distant fourth in Heisman for a 7-5 team. With numbers almost matched by dusty Bonner a year later.

He was a great qb. And without seeing the list I can't say he doesn't belong. But I didn't think he was automatic either.

How cheap do you have to be to go to a store just to read the magazine there?

I happen to go into CVS regularly, it's conveniently close to where I live. I just happened to be there waiting for a prescription to be filled for my son when I saw the magazine. My point was the mag wasn't worth the cover price, and No, I'm not going to make a special trip back there just to look at it again. Geez.

Can't argue with any of those being ahead of Couch although I don't know much about Sullivan other than he won the Heisman. McCarron didn't have the numbers Couch had but he won 2 titles as a starter and has another ring as a redshirt freshman. McCarron is the only one UK fans could even question the rest are no doubt about it ahead of Couch.

I think you are selling Couch a little (maybe a lot) short.

Dusty Bonner
3,266 yards passing
26 touchdowns
13 interceptions
303-465 for a 65% completion rate

Tim Couch
4,275 yards passing
36 touchdowns
15 interceptions
400-553 for a 72% completion rate

The numbers are nowhere near matched. Couch was a consensus All American, number 1 draft pick, and took Kentucky to it's first New Year's Day bowl game in 48 years. Dusty Bonner's were still good, but in that system most of our quarterbacks numbers were. For what Couch did for our team, he deserves a spot in the top 10.

Jack Youngblood .... UF Defensive End ... 1968-1970 ...
All-SEC ... All-American ... College Football Hall of Fame ...
Rams #1 Draft Pick ... All Pro ... NFL Hall of Fame ...
he certainly should be in the conversation.

All three Mannings, Fran Tarkenton, Kenny Stabler, Joe Namath, Cam Newton, Matt Stafford, Jay Cutler, Tebow and arguably Manziel, who can run much better than TC could and won the Heisman. Would also consider Bart Starr and Babe Parilli based especially on their pro career and longevity. Bert Jones from LSU comes to mind, as does Eric Zeier.

I loved TC when he was at UK, but a good argument could be made that he benefited greatly from a pass happy offense that made him look better than he was, much like David Klingler and Andre Ware.

Zeier had terrific career. Several of Spurrier's QB's had nice numbers. Cutler had outstanding career for very marginal teams.

Any SEC List that does not include Bob Gain(Outland Trophy Winner), Lou Micheals(two-time All-American), Babe Parilli(All-American), Art Still, Tim Couch, Craig Yeast, James Whalen and Hall of Famer, Steve Meilinger is bogus.

Gabe, I won't argue the old timers that I never saw, and Still (best player I have ever seen at UK) was on the list, according to this thread.

So which QBs on my list above do you think Couch should replace?

As for Yeast, at 5'7"? Come on man, he is not even close to the top 10 all time receivers in the SEC, there have been an avalanche of great WRs in this conference, most of whom were way bigger, and every bit as fast, and had much better pro careers.

IMO we have one legitimate claim on that list as far as QB's:

Heck - before Injury the whole backfield of Geogia could be on the list

Is this a college list or a pro list? I could care less what a player did in the pros.Tebow was a heck of a QB for the gators and didn't do anything in the nfl. I put no stock in what somebody did after they left the sec.

Couch's numbers were inflated by the system. He wasn't a top ten all time QB. The NFL exposed all of his weaknesses. I always said he should give half his pay to Mumme.

Who cares what he did or didn't do in the NFL. This is about what they did in college and Couch put up historic numbers and took a terrible program to it's first New Year's Day bowl in 48 years. His numbers exceeded all the other quarterbacks under Mumme pretty substantially. It doesn't take near as much at quarterback for a team like Alabama or Florida to be a winner. They mostly need game managers. It takes much more than that to win here at a New Year's Day bowl level. Since you mentioned NFL, you might as well throw out there that Cleveland was so bad that no quarterback would have been successful there at that time and it should have zero bearing on how good they were in college.

Yeah, he couldn't throw flat on his back or running for his life, that was two of them
