I certainly don't disagree with this. Could it be any worse to have . . . say . . . another Jon Hood vs. a Tai Wynyard? Neither really major contributors.

Just being devil's advocate. . . . not saying they should or shouldn't.

It depends on how good he is, tell that to Lofton and some of the boys that went to Vandy over the years. We wouldn't have had Hawkins, Rex or Darius Miller, Pelphrey, Farmer and Winston Bennett they were all Mr basketballs. We never had one who didn't help the team at some point and some of them didn't do as well as others. I think he should get a long hard look who ever it is, ratings don't measure heart and desire and will to win.

I may be wrong but I believe all UK championship teams have had an in state player on the roster. If thats the case at least use one of the walk-on spots for a talented KY kid. So long as he's smart enough to help team gpa like Pullman, what's the difference. It isn't like he contributes on the court.
I was actually kind of surprised Cal used those slots on friends of the family rather than someone from KY. However, its his prerogative. The case could be made for Washington since he was born in Louisville but I'm not sure he list it as his hometown.

Nobody should get an automatic scholarship to play basketball or football at Kentucky.

But I would like for the coach at UK, who ever he may be to limit walkons to Kentuckians. I see no advantage to bringing in a 6 foot kid from a Northeast school to sit on the bench for four years when a local player can sit just as good.

I have no problem with a Kentucky Mr. Basketball on the team - not 4 of them though. I actually thinks its bad form to not offer,

Its the University of Kentucky.

I think there should be a special scholarship associated with anyone earning that title that guarantees them acceptance and a ride at UK. Not a guarantee on the team, not even as a walk on, but a full ride to the University of Kentucky, and then the program should find a spot for one of them to be on the team, even if he never plays.

There should always be room on the bench for one Kentucky Mr. Basketball.

This was hotly debated years ago and (former)State Representative Roger Noe from Harlan Co. even introduced legislation to require UK offer Mr. Basketball and Mr. Football in Ky, of course, it failed. This was initiated due to a small school in Harlan Co (Evarts HS) had a Mr. Football in Scott Russell, whom had broken the all time rushing record held by, IIRC, Dereck Homer. Russell had offers from other D1 schools, but his HS coach, Bill Musick, advised him to hold out for a UK offer.....it never happened and Russell ended up at a small college out of state.

This wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing IF it wouldn't result in eventually having four of them on one team. That would only leave nine scholarships for the rest. So we can't do that, of course.

BUT, I do think it should be an unwritten policy that we should always try to have a Kentucky kid or two somewhere on the roster. I means let's face it, Cal seldom uses all his scholarships.

This is my thinking, too. We often have unused scholarships. What would it hurt to fill them with a couple of kids from Kentucky. Cal could get the top guys, and still have room for a couple of guys from the state. I'm not complaining, just saying I would be grateful if we could work in some in-state guys.

You can't be serious. If this were to happen, after 4 years of this. We would have 4 of our scholarships tied up on four 2/3 -Star recruits. If you want to run Calipari off, pass a law like this and he's gone. And I wouldn't blame him.

Some recent Ky Mr. BBs: Ross Neltner, Camron Justice, Nathan Dieuddone, Walt Allen, Elisha Justice, Dominic Tilford, Scott Hundley, Rick Jones, etc.

No because they are 4 year players, which means you could have 4 scholarships tied up in kids not very good.

The premise that you would always have 4 scholarships tied up is faulty. Not every Mr. Basketball would automatically want to come to UK. Some will have allegiances to other schools. Others will actually want to play vs. sitting on the bench with mop up minutes only.
As a general rule it’s dangerous to force such a potential handicap on a coach. But in reality it would probably have a negligible impact if maintaining minimum GPA requirement was part of the package. Especially the way Cal recruits.
