I mean if the Reds aren't going to remove the statue of an admitted child rapist whose only defense is "I, uh, thought that 14-year-old was 16!", then why not? Payne's importance to his sport certainly outweighs his terrible crimes, right?
Sorry, he had a chance to be a poster child for integration and did the opposite, turned into a serial rapist. Pretty dumb, he could have been another Wilt the Stilt with all the women he wanted with the money and fame he could have had.
I'm just irritated that Pete Rose still has a statue on display in Cincy after he admitted that he had an affair with a literal child (and likely had many more such relationships). I was attempting to be sarcastic by suggesting Payne be honored as well.
At exactly what point does an athlete's off-field behavior overshadow his or her career accomplishments?
