So now, with all the conspiracy theories about Calipari and UK, some people will say, if they lose in the SECT, it was because they were paid off by Vegas.

Well... yeah... and that's in addition to the usual "crappy refs" scenario.

Actually with the money involved it does worry me a bit in the big tourney. I think someone could make a lot of money making gray area calls to get players into foul trouble.

Always felt more to the story with UNLV '91 and the "Fixer" and definitely Chris Webber's walk followed by calling the TO he didn't have and his relationship with Ed Martin.

I think Webber's screw-up was real... but I'm with you on the UNLV example. For some reason, it always seemed a little fishy to me.

Actually a non story. A vegas book stands to lose 6 figures, big deal. Even if it is say $750,000. They have lost 2.5 million on the superbowl in the past and I am sure lost more than $750,000 on this years superbowl as there was a lot of early money on New England at +3. I am sure they probably have a way to mitigate some of their losses as well, ie. placing large bets for UK to win each game from here on out with other casinos possibly overseas. I know local bookies hedge their bets to mitigate losses, seems the larger casinos would do the same to a degree.

they profited 54.2 million last year according to the article, so either way I think they will be just fine.

Casinos make money from volume of bets. They have a vested interest in maintaining sports as above board and free from point shaving corruption. Individual bookies? Sure, but not Las Vegas. I doubt any bookie has enough exposure to make the juice worth the squeeze (significant risk involved, after all).

"Against Duke, Wisconsin or Arizona they'd be a five- or six-point favorite," Vaccaro said. "And those are the elite teams. The best."

Vegas is going to lose money in the same way the guy who wins the lottery loses half his money because he takes a lump sum payout.

Possibly the reason it may not happen, because we'll find out for sure it the Cats lose in a game that they get reamed by the officials with highly suspicious calls, then Vegas definitely has their claws buried in NCAA Officiating like I say all the time.
Part of the reason I keep lobbying for Kentucky to be in the South Region where at least they will have a huge crowd advantage, which is unlikely in a northern arena like Cleveland.

I want Kentucky to go undefeated as much as any UK Fan does, but if they are going to lose,I hope it's in the SEC Tourney Championship game.I don't trust gamblers and the reach of their money and power.Las Vegas will probably stand to lose big $$$ if Kentucky goes undefeated.

Cal said those were two obvious fouls...said they were so obvious that he couldn't argue the calls.

Pointing that out because some will always claim files are "phantom" or "bogus" so that they can fit them into their conspiracy theory.

What the hell did you expect him to say? They weren't obvious fouls.

Why are you even here, if you're going to be an argumentative pest in every thread. No wonder Kansas fans hate Mizzou. You guys are like pecker gnats.

Kentucky will most certainly have a HUGE crowd advantage in Cleveland. UK fans have been buying up those seats since they went on sale in October.

The South Regional is in a place that allows for no crowd advantage at all essentially.

Exposure? A few 100 thousand? It pales in comparison to what he and Vegas stand to make over the next month on NCAA games. This next month is like Christmas for them.

keep trolling...he said that to "protect' the player and to send a message to KAT, to not be in those situations that grey call can be made. ie Be in the correct defensive spot and they CAN"T call it.

Lexington is 350 miles or so from Cleveland, and 1000 miles Houston. There is no way we would have a bigger crowd advantage in the South region. More fans will go to Cleveland simply because it's a fairly close drive.

Just be glad the bookie is William Hill instead of Henry Hill.

For those who might not understand, ESPN did a very interesting 30 for 30 about basketball players from Boston College who were implicated/accused of point shaving in the late 70's. Strangely enough, Henry Hill (the main character in the movie Goodfellas played by Ray Liotta) ended up being the one who exposed this to the FBI.

Your instinct to follow the money is right, but your idea of how Vegas makes money is entirely wrong. The Vegas conspiracy theory idea has no basis in how those companies (corporations, really) make money (i.e. reality). And basketball is, what, 5.9% of the total take? Including the NBA? Legitimate gambling operations (which for sports is Vegas) have far too much to lose for what amounts to drops in a bucket. Vegas makes money on sports gambling via volume of bets made, and fluctuations from individual events short of the Super Bowl are almost irrelevant. More likely to lead to a bookmaker getting fired than any attempt to sway the refs.

You're flat out wrong, and this information is all over if you look for it.
