anyone use this service? Looks like a nice little deal. Only question I have is what do you do for local channels? I'm not very smart and don't know what device I would need to get them. Mostly just cbs. Tia

I have it running on a Roku stick and it's a little choppy to change channels but aside from that the picture is fine running on 30 meg internet. I'd just recommend using an AppleTV or Roku 3, you can get $50 off the Roku 3 if you prepay 3 months upfront.

For networks, if you have Time Warner, as long as you have cable or internet running to a jack now you'll still be able to pick them up buy running a coax from the wall to the TV. I also bought this antenna for $6 for the upstairs TV and it picks up the networks perfectly fine.

I have dish right now but if I do this it will be to replace it. I pay ~ $140/mo and watch MAYBE 10 channels. It's just a giant waste of money. To me it's not a luxury worth having. I never click over to the African News Network, which is a real channel I have. It's stupid. ESPN,s, HGtV, lifetime, food, history, Cartoon Network, Disney, Nickelodeon. That's it. I just want cbs for local news and sports. I use a chromecast for my Netflix/HBOGo which is not supported by the Sliggtv, but they've got a deal for a free roku stick when you sign up, so I just don't see the downside. I can google what's happening in Zaire.

I'd recommend switching to Time Warner and getting a 20 or 30 meg package if you do. In the meantime you could pick up that antenna and try the networks out, if it doesn't work you can send it back and order a stronger amplified one that'll run $40 or $50.

We just got it with the Roku 3 deal. It's not available on AppleTV.

For local channels, we have an HD antenna (~$25). It's great, but we have pretty direct sight-lines to downtown.

Pay the $50 and get the Roku 3. If this is going to be your prime source of TV, you'll be happy you paid for the CPU "horse power."

If you've been paying for DirectTV, you should spend the $50 on it to start.

Can you use on multiple TVs in the house (simultaneously), or do you have to have a unique setup for each one?

That's the main downfall with Sling, you only get one stream at a time. My wife rarely watches the "cable" channels so it doesn't make a difference for me.

Wife is interested in this, but that would never work, thank goodness.

She watches E (which isn't on SlingTV) or Forensic Files, and I watch sports in the other room.

[cheers]

I guess you could still technically save money having 2 Sling accounts plus internet, but I'd say at that point your savings aren't worth the trouble.

Nope, until they have it down where it's any TV in the house, there isn't even a chance.

Can't even FATHOM a random Tuesday night in December when I want to watch random CBB but the wife is in the middle of a Lifetime Movie in the other room, so a fight ensues. Or flip a coin and see who gets to watch their desired programming that night. [eyeroll]

False. She wouldn't put up with it either, we watch the same thing 5% of the time ---> whatever show we currently have in rotation. The rest is me/sports & her/horrificE-RealityBullShit

We pay $100 for cable, and it's worth every penny over paying $40 and dealing/stressing over all that ********. No thanks.

Do you have a roku/chromecast/Apple TV? If yes then you can watch it with your watchEspn account. I would understand if it was something other than sports, but that's a pretty easy fix. Hell, I use watchEspn at work all the time. Not a complicated situation at all. Idk. I understand the convenience of cable, but to me the cost is just silly for the very little use I get out of it.

Multiple steams are out for this season obviously, but I'm sure it'll be there next year - it will follow the same ramp-up in infrastructure as Netflix, imo.

By then, TWC will probably have it's own competing product - thanks to guys like me and BRax applying the heat.

In summation: you're welcome in advance.

We have AppleTV & Chromecast. I don't want to be left watching ANYTHING important (Sports) on a streaming account.

Hell, it sucks horribly in the rare instances I have to use ESPN3 in the event we miss a UK Tip or my DirecTV goes out in a storm for 5-15 minutes ----------> and it's miserable.

I can see this structure being perfected/the norm in years to come, and I'll give it a shot if/when that time comes.

The way it's setup now? No way in hell, JMO.

No, not at all. Unless there are drastic changes, it's not even an option.

In fact, I'll bet you whatever you like I'm not 'cord cutting' in the next 5 years.

FYI if you sign in WatchESPN with your sling account it knocks anyone wactching sling off that way too. It really is only one stream at a time.

I had to sign in with my inlaws account on WatchESPN to prevent that.

When were 6 years old, we all knew how to change the channel to play Nintendo. It's that difficult.

Difficult? Maybe not.

Annoying, Inconvenient & a pretty sad & pathetic way for a Middle-Class family to save $40? Certainly.

I'd rather take up extreme couponing if it came to that.

My wife watches sports with me. My kids can watch Netflix or whatever on their TV. In the future it may pose a problem if sling hasn't figured out how to allow two streams at once, but worst case scenario I can call dish and add service again. Jesus. You act like "cord cutting" is like moving to Cambodia or something. It's cutting the fat and saving money in the process. Enjoy the fifty eleven channels you don't ever watch, loser.

How much TV do you watch?

I essentially stopped watching broadcast/cable TV after my first year in the dorms (2001) and haven't really missed it since.

Not very much.

Sports, Dateline, and usually have 1 show I'm watching with the wife.

We both work though, so I guess we're rich enough to not have to stream & share a single television "portal" through our computer & multiple other devices, I guess.

It's a luxury, just like our AC that we pump at 65 all summer long, despite being able to save probably $100 per month if we were willing to sit around being hot & miserable.

#blessed

BRax you definitely need to trim some fat bub. Good call.

At the moment, I am hammering my wife's Canadian student loan - so that factors heavily.

0.75 Canadian to 1 USD = [cheers]

And we also keep our house at 67.

Doesn't PTI admittedly drive a 15 year old Corolla with hail damage and manual windows? But cutting a cable bill in half by using a device that plugs into the TV (like a cable box) is just out of the question? K

Coupl'a non-patres familias who can't be expected to abandon extended adolescence quite yet.

Let me know if you're looking for tips on your dog's 529, guys.
