SNL 50th

Hard to believe but SNL will be 1/2 century old this year. Anniversary show airs this Sunday. I was a month away from my 15th birthday in 1975 when it started. I'll admit I haven't watched it much in the past 25 years but it sure was a groundbreaking show back then. Favorite memories? Tough to say. I'll open it up for discussion.

I picked up around the mid-to-late 80s and have been hooked ever since. Looking forward to the show this Sunday. My favorite era was the Lonely Island/Bill Hader/Sudekis/Forte seasons.

By the way, when you think of the introduction of the cast after the cold opens, which name do you hear being said first? You know, "It's Saturday Night Live. With ...." Mine is Dana Carvey

My favorite memory was from the first season with Richard Pryor during final week at UK. That year, the NBC show was called "Saturday Night" as there was another show on ABC called "Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell".

Used to love it back in the 80s and most of the 90s. I have rarely watched it anymore live, catch some clips here and there on YT. I guess Norm, Phil, and Farley probably my fav cast members. Bill Hader was great on there too and apparently hasn’t been invited to the anniversary special.

I remember watching the 25th Anniversary Special live. I think I remember Bill Murray doing some song with lyrics of something like "..and in 2025, if Lorne Michaels is still alive, there will be Saturday Night Live..." and thinking how absurdly far away that felt. Welp lol. Time is relative so they say.

I watched that too! You're right. Forgot about that Bill Murray song. Never would have thought they'd make it another 25 years.

Comedy in the 1970s was cutting edge and pushing the boundaries before everything became politically correct. I wonder if the famous "Word Association" skit with Richard Pryor can be shown in the SNL50 Special?

There have also been movies based on Pat, the Roxbury guys, and mcgruber. They range in quality from ‘eh’ to ‘holy crap this is a crime against humanity’

It's amazing Norm survived as long as he did on there. He couldn't do impressions and really wouldn't put forth an effort since that wasn't his thing, yet his ****** imitations of Flea and Tarantino were brilliant. Using OJ and Hasselhoff as crutches years after the fact would be like Leno doing Lewinski jokes in 2003. For Leno, it'd be considered lame. But it worked when Norm did it. He then gets fired but brought back to host, leading to him saying during his monologue that he's either gotten really funny or the show has gotten really, really bad. What a brillant Canuck bastard.

The Blues Brothers is one of the goats and by far the best movie that evolved from SNL sketch/characters.

Yeah. Completely forgot that Blues Brothers originated on SNL. That is most definitely the GOAT in this category. Not debatable.

My dad used to love Dana Carveys Ross Perot impression - always found the old political impressions funny. Never were super mean spirited just goofy that everyone could laugh at. Will Ferrells Bush as well was hilarious.

Ana Gasteyer's Martha Stewart impressions and the sarcasm segment with Matthew Perry were some of my favorites. Also, the Bush/Gore debate with Ferrell as Bush.

McGruber was good. Another one was Stewart Saves his family based on the Al Franken character. It was fine.

Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell, Mike Myers were best cast members. John Mulaney and Nate Bergatze have shown it still brings laughs.

Music has always been great. I expect they'll have a whole segment for the anniversary show.

I watched the entire show last night and was disappointed. Not what I expected BUT to be fair, 50 years is a hell of a long time and how the hell can you pick and choose what to air. Sad note. How old everyone looked. Hey, I'm 50 years older too so I shouldn't comment.
