Two things with regard to peoples driving skills now versus a generation or more ago that aren’t just being distracted by your phone. First, this is a need to have everything as quick as possible, and must do everything as fast as possible generation. People put their destination in their GPS and automatically set it to find the fastest route. They don’t ever leave themselves 5 to 10 minutes of leeway to get wherever they are going.

The second item is a combination of not having drivers Ed in high school anymore and nobody having their fathers Take them out to learn to drive in parking lots or in bad weather anymore. All of the drivers Ed stuff is done by companies, most of whom do a very poor job. I know some of those companies are former cops but I can tell you that they’re learning nothing about yielding and how do use exit on ramps to get up to speed of the flow of traffic. Same with driving in the left lane at the speed limit. We all know that you shouldn’t go above the speed limit, but I can’t tell you how many times in this area I’ve seen one of those driving school cars putzing in the passing lane below the speed limit. It just seems like kids aren’t getting enough real practice driving, everything is structured based on whatever their driving schools schedule says. We need more kids out learning to drive tractors or old pick up trucks on a farm somewhere at 14 and 15.
There are a couple of other things not being taught anymore(or so it seems). One, always use turn signals especially on the highways when you are going at fast speeds. Don't slam on your brakes if you are about to miss your exist and try to cut across 3 lanes of traffic without using your turn signal trying to get to your exit that you planned poorly for. Two, If you can see the taillights of the car in front of you for gods sake turn off your high beams. Three, before slamming on your brakes on the highway, look in your rearview mirror and make sure there isn't a semi behind you. Four, put the feckin phone down, nothing is that important to read on your phone as opposed to killing someone going 75 mph on the highway. Five, expect pedestrians to walk out in front of you because they don't teach look left, look right, look left before crossing streets anymore. This is why I drive like a much older person.

This blizzard definitely isn't a bust up here in MA. Almost a foot and a half of snow already, and it's blowing out there. All of the windows (facing in each direction) in the house are coated over in snow so you can't see outside at all. It's a 1.5' of super wet, heavy snow that is still being blown around because of the winds.

And we're still in the middle of it, with heavy snow and wind.

This is going to be crazy to try to dig out of.

PSA: Don’t do this.

I went out to shovel, and the wife next door was finishing up her driveway. Figuring I could use a hand, I asked if she wanted to make a quick 50 bucks. She didn’t respond favorably. So, I ended up self-serving, as usual.

😞

6. Use your turn signal before you brake so the driver behind you has a heads up. Doing it after braking is useless.

Seems to me that these have always been an issue. I feel like I've been complaining my whole life about both.

The lack of turn signal drives me crazy. It literally requires about 3-4 inches of hand movement to accomplish.

I think it's smart of your wife to stay next door rather than with you.

You helped drive this thread dedicated to the Blizzard of 2026 into the lane of general complaints about driving. Without using a turn signal. You're definitely not an excellent driver. Yeah, definitely not.
Do I have to turn in my Starfleet Command membership card?

Turn signals are "options" on cars sold in Louisiana.

Our flight out of Philly to Naples was canceled today… left yesterday instead! Tee-off at 1230 today… cold out! Only getting to 68 today!! Like I care
We left out of Philly yesterday before is started also. Sitting at a poolside bar right now in St. Lucia. Just got a “WE ARE…” while wearing my Penn State hat. 83 and sunny with a light breeze.

JERSEY. STRONG. o_O

I’m wrapping up shoveling the driveway today when a neighbor came by with a snowblower and blew my sidewalk. He did it for free and gave me a fist bump. Granted, he told me to go f*ck myself, but he still gave me a blow and fisted me for free. 😃

I have a bit of a reverse snowstorm/blizzard story. I was supposed to leave Hawaii Sunday evening (11:30 pm EST), and take a red eye home. Well, the 2nd leg of the trip into Philadelphia was canceled. Initially, the airline rescheduled me to another flight on Sunday evening (to DFW, then a jump to Atlanta, then to Philadelphia). And again, the Philadelphia leg got canceled. So, they rescheduled me to another flight that didn't leave until early Monday evening EST, with a flight to San Diego then a flight to Philadelphia arriving at 5:23 am EST on Tuesday. Thankfully, with the power vested in me by a credit card, I was able to extend my lodging for a day and extend my rental car for a day, and enjoy one more day of beautiful weather in Hawaii. And now, I'm sitting in Kona airport, which is an outdoor airport with a roof over the seating areas for the gates. It's in the 80s here at the airport, but will be @ 27 degrees when I land. I'm not looking forward to dealing with my car at the parking lot after I arrive. The only good news (other than spending another day in Hawaii), is that my neighbor knew I was away, and plowed my driveway today, so that I can drive into the garage when I get home.

Wow, the Philly airport cancelling flights…that never happens, except always. Worst airport in the US.

Unless a Governor closes an airport for some reason, or the FAA closes an airport for some reason, cancelations are done by the airlines.

I know some business travelers aren't big fans of Philadelphia International Airport. But it's not as though PHL had the highest percentage of cancelations. Looking just at flights into an airport, FlightAware has these stats for Sunday and Monday.

You stink. oh it's you Tom, sorry. Since you left, it's gotten edgy around here. Inmates running the asylum and all.

Safe travels.

and a sign of weakness in Boston
They are “blinkers” in Boston. Funny story. When I was dating my wife, we were in Cape Cod. One of the locals tried to cut of my father in law in slow traffic. He’s a Philly guy so he wasn’t having it and wouldn’t let her in. Both cars had the windows down and she yells out the window, “Didn’t you see my blinka?” in her Boston accent to which my father in law replied “It’s not a blinka, it’s a turn signal and you can wait like every else jacka**.” That was nearly 30 years ago and I remember it like was yesterday.
