I've worked for businesses, been a GM for a worldwide company, had businesses sold above me, had to sit out non-competes, started businesses, owned businesses, had business partners rob me blind, etc.

Before all that I was a happy golf bum. Happy to be that again.

As far as your search, whenever I was in a bind I always thought of what is it that I do best, and how can I capitalize on it quick and still w/ a future. And went from there.

It would be a bit forward, but if you would add more specifics about your field someone here might think enough of it to copy/paste it to a friend or colleague.

I had a female friend decades ago that built a great career out of being seen by her future boss w/ a Rolling Rock in her hand at a function. The PSU alum network is real, but it's not the dweebs in State College. It's the real people in the real world. Always has been, always will be.

With one of the nations largest alumni networks, was wondering if anyone had any advice on leveraging that for my search.

Thanks all!
Sorry to hear this. Could you provide a few more details? What type of work were you involved with and what you'd like to do going forward. Might help to zero in on the part of that large network that can help you best.

Thanks for asking for more details, wasn't sure how much to share. I worked for 21 years for a large financial firm in Baltimore (figure it out). I spent majority of my time in data, but got my green belt in 2021 and have been working in process engineering. Plan to invest my severance into getting my black belt from the Villanova program assuming nothing pops up immediately. Glad to share a resume if someone has a lead.

I know a few people that could maybe help.

My only advice is that you become a member of the PSUAA (if not already) for the sole reason to get access to their Alumni database. You can do an "advanced search" and seek out alums who are employed in similar fields and/or preferred fields of interest. Send them an email explaining your situation, experience / qualifications and a description of your perfect job. They might not have or know of any openings, but they might know someone else who can help.

The more people you contact, the wider your network becomes.

Good luck.

Got laid off at age 60 after 29 years with the company. New owners came in and move operations to Texas.
Took 21 months to find permanent employment, actually had to choose between 2 jobs. Did temp work in between. Best of luck. Your day will come. Keep us posted.

You get the ‘delete’ button and you’re going to be on the Mt Rushmore of message boards.
I was promised a Delete Button contingent on satisfactory Performance Reviews, but a big problem is that I really suck at moderating the Jukebox threads.

But enough jocularity. A good man is asking for help finding a job.

This thread title can be used to highlight the power of a comma ...

"So got laid off this week" = terrible, unfortunate circumstance
"So, got laid, off this week" = nice and relaxed and facing a great week ahead.

I agree with what others have said - use your network to leverage opportunities. Take the chance to speak to anyone who might have a lead (like you are doing here).

You mention you got laid off after 21 years - so it's been a while since you have been on the job market. It's different now than 21 years ago. The approach is different.

Just a couple of things:

1. Looking for a job is a job. Do it for 8 hours a day max, and then do other things (gym, time with family, etc) just like you normally would.

2. Job searching is a lot like dating. You and they are looking for a best match.

3. Keep track on your mental health. It's easy to be consumed by the process, because for so many of us - our job is more than our livelihood, it's a big part of our identity. If you feel down or overwhelmed, just find an outlet for it.

Hang in there.

Moms retired and consulted for 5 years thru Business Talent Group. It’s like a Kelly Temp group for executives.

Was retirement not an option at that age?

No, wife is 6 years younger than me, and her job doesn't provide health insurance nor a 401K. I landed a fantastic position with an investment firm where they match 50% on your 401k contribution. About to turn 68, still working but only 3 days a week with the same 401k policy. Making decent money for a 3-day work week. Key part - hardly any stress. Any stress that I have is self-imposed.

My plan is to retire in 2 years (I will be 55.) My wife is 9 years younger than I am. I (jokingly) call her my retirement plan!
