So I just rewatched the game...

So I decided today with a clear head I would rewatch the game just to figure out what the hell happened. Saturday night I was too invested to really see what was happening, but after another look I came away with a few thoughts.

First. It seems that our youth is what killed us. On both the Southern touchdown before half, and I believe the second long score in the second half, our secondary just completely blew coverages. In addition, Drew Barker made some very glaring mistakes that an experienced quarterback doesn't make. That fumble in the second half came from trying to do too much. He just has to take the loss there. On the interception, he locked onto that receiver the second the ball was snapped and simply under threw it. Richardson (also young) has to do a better job of making sure that ball doesn't get picked.

Second. It amazes me how quickly our crowd turned on our team. As soon as they scored the opening touchdown of the second half, it seemed like the boo birds and groans came out in full force. Even if the thought of blowing what was left of our lead hadn't entered somebody's head on our team, the Commonwealth crowd made sure that they knew we fully expected them to blow this lead. You know what that leads to? Overthinking things, panic, and consequently defensive lapses. I get that it is frustrating, but pissing and moaning about every 4 yard run our defensive gives up just further compounds the struggles of a young team.

Third. Southern Miss is a very good team. Are they in conference USA? Yes. However, they are loaded with veterans who have been in big game situations many times before. When a play needed to be made, they made it. Not once in the second half did we get lucky with them dropping a pass, or having a miscommunication. Once the crowd started to turn, there was blood in the water.

Fourth, I haven't looked up the penalty numbers but there were a few very obviously blown calls. A couple of the pass interference calls were atrocious. One was commented on by the analyst and obviously uncatchable. The backbreaking catch that was ruled out of bounds but still gave them a first (and consequently a field goal) in the fourth quarter was OPI. Homeboy grabbed Westry's jersey and pulled him past coming back to the ball, Westry grabbed on for dear life. In addition, I saw numerous holds by Southern Miss go uncalled. Sour Grapes? Maybe. I saw what I saw though.

On the positive side, it looks to me like we do in fact have an explosive offense. When we were playing loose, it looks like our receivers are going to be damn hard to cover. If Barker can limit the mistakes (and maybe look at more than one option), then I think that they can be good enough to carry us through games.

Another bright spot was the new linebacker Jones. Kid was all over the place on defense.

Like everybody, I thought about flinging myself off a ledge on Saturday night. This loss was horribly frustrating. The reason it was so frustrating wasn't because we got beaten down by a vastly more talented team. It was because we beat ourselves with correctable mental errors and inexperience; all of which will get better as the season progresses. I know everyone is tired of hearing about the future and want results now, but we ran off our veteran QB and lost our veteran DT to god knows what weeks before the first game. We should also have Tubman and Hatcher in key defensive roles this year. Losing key veterans like that is a lot harder for us to overcome than the more prominent football schools because it's so hard for us to get them here in the first place.

I'm ranting I guess, but I mainly wanted to say that even with the loss I have hope for the future. There was an unbelievable amount of pressure on those kids going into the Southern Miss game and now that pressure is gone. Southern Miss came in and played like they had nothing to lose, and now neither do we. It's much easier being the hunter than the hunted. I look for us to keep it competitive in the Swamp on Saturday, and to steadily progress as the season goes on. You all can jump ship if you want to, but don't come crawling back if we start winning. I was born a Kentucky fan, I will die a Kentucky fan.

Yes the defense sucked but didn't we already know this going in? This season we have gotta outscore opponents. Two touchdowns in second half would of won the game.

Hell, I think if we don't get the very questionable holding call on the last drive where we were moving the ball on the ground we win the game.

jauk brother, you are trying to make that holding call akin to the Tulane pass interference calls.

We have more issues than one holding call, which could be called on 80% of all plays.

I doubt it. Our defense couldn't stop Southern Miss if it's life depended on it.
Once they got tired, that was true. They looked pretty good in the first half though. An answer on that drive would have bought the D more time and given us a little bit more flexibility for offensive play calling.

your offense only ran 14 plays in the whole 2nd half. your Defense was on the field for 24 of the 30 minutes of that 2nd half. do I really need to spell it out for you hillrods on why your Defense sucked?
A fan of a team from Mississippi calling others hillrods is rich.

Over in HOB their was a thread with a link that had pics of the D getting burned on jet sweeps in the 1st half. Those plays wore out the D and loosened it up in the middle. The 3 TO by southern is what kept them from scoring in the first and they still scored 17.

A Good D wouldnt let them score that much all game.

When your D cannot get 3 in outs ....like ever something is a miss.

Looking back to last season... UL, Georgia, Miss St, UT etc etc any team that has a pulse on offense just scores at will on us. Offense is not to blame its the D. Its their job to stop the other team. In 3 plays they could be back on the bench resting.

I see lots of excuses, ifs, buts, hypothetical scenarios, but everyone fails to address the obvious: PLAY IN THE TRENCHES

No team has ever won a championship based on their WRs and CBs. We NEED better line play period. Look at how easily one USM OL was able to hold Elam in check. Look at the last UK offensive play where a 3-man rush resulted in a sack.

I'd like to know who is responsible for reporting the likes of Mosier, Meadows, Elam, etc. dominating in practice. It obviously isn't a glaring report on them but the truth that whoever they're lining up across from is stinking it up.

Improve play on the lines of scrimmage and we will start winning some games.

I was incredibly disappointed in the play of our offensive line. We couldn't run block, and after the first half couldn't keep pressure off of Barker. The defensive line I don't think was completely miserable until about the end of the third quarter when they had been on the field then entire quarter.

Brother you are a true Ky. Fan. I admire your love for our Cats. Overall I feel we have a pretty good team, but if you will look back over the stoops era, all a team needs to do to beat the cats is run the ball. We havn't stopped the run in 4 years. We can have bigger better players and still get whipped up front. When you run the ball you run more plays, run more clock, and keep the other offense on the sidelines. someone will have to coach our defensive front up or nothing will change. We have some good talent up front. You need look no further than the front line coaching to make our cats a fine team.

The score was 35-10, there were 42 seconds left in the first half and Southern Miss. had the ball inside their own 20! The camera panned to the sidelines where Barker was shown walking around giving High Fives! Not in the 4th quarter, mind you! We know what happened! I got a sick feeling in my stomach when I saw our leader who should be with headsets on and talking to Hinshaw! Maybe Hinshaw was already going down to locker room! Anyway the perception was not good! It was like it should be "ENGRAINED" with everything that has happened in the past! I for one think leadership starts at the top! And I do not mean the QB! Though he has no leadership qualities! But the coach who has digressed with more talent! A win over Florida is THE only thing that can save him!

I have to give you a lot of credit for being optimistic, but the offensive and defensive lines have left me with a whole lot of concern.

In the first drive of the third quarter the runningback(s) for Southern Miss ran it for about 25 yards. We had 30 yards of penalties and they had about 28 passing yards. The pass interference calls were huge. However, the average YPC for that drive for Ito Smith, the only RB to touch the ball, was 5 yards a carry. That is just unacceptable and if the opposing team is picking up 5 yards a carry there is no reason for them to throw it. They were actually throwing it too much and it almost bit them in the butt with the dropped interception by McClain.

Fact of the matter is that we could have and should have won that game. Southern Miss responded like winners. They went out there and refused to lose. Our guys, on the other hand, began to lay down at the first sign of adversity. We could have hidden our weakness and still won this game, but instead of picking ourselves up after getting punched in the face early in the second half, we laid down. We laid down and let them come back and kick our butts.

We had the ball all of 7:28 in the second half. That is because of our mistakes and because we failed to stop the run. Our mistakes came because of breakdowns by our offensive line and our defensive problems started at the point of attack, the defensive line. Unless both those lines get themselves right then we have little hope against SEC teams.

First PI should've been holding or nothing. Clearly not catchable. Second one that drive was pure garbage.

Late holding call on us was really weak too, considering the holds USM got away with all night long.

Didn't decide the game. Just very poor calls at really inopportune times

Sadly, this is an incredibly bold statement.

I guess he thinks we can make player trades like in the pros, or we have a minor league system to call up hot prospects . . . something that is going to prevent that abysmal, behemoth, lard-wagon from hitching itself to the middle of our defensive line for 8 SEC games

Fourth year of this experiment and still a poorly constructed defense. Stoops came to UK as a defensive specialist, however, there continues to be a lack of depth and coaching on that side of the ball. One more year can make a difference, but will fans be patient? Stoops must get this team to a bowl this year, imo. Still going to support this regime, but time is of the essence...

I really don't think our defense played bad in the first

No, I just know we have an incredibly young defense and common sense tells you that they will improve with experience. You can simulate real games all you want in practice but there's no replacement for actual playing time.

I for one appreciate the rewatch and breakdown.

Based on the rewatch, did you see any kind of defensive adjustment at all?

That's the part that bothers me the most. I think most people knew that stopping the run (and defensive line in general) would be an issue. I think most also hoped that the coaches would make adjustments in-game, and that just didn't seem to happen, but again I haven't rewatched. Not sure if I can.

I apologize for our fan not being able to handle us winning the game in a classy manner. You guys have some outstanding talent, and after another recruiting year will be much better. I look forward to next year's game in Hattiesburg. We will be in your shoes with playing young players.

You wrote "steadily improve" in your previous post. That implies, each game, our defense, performs better than the game before. Now you are making the ambiguous statement that experience will make them better. Not the same. After 9 paragraphs you would think you would know your own position on the matter.
