Some Anger at Pope is Deserved (But Not Most)

I work in accounting. If I was asked today to be the CFO of Apple or Amazon - even though it would be a significant pay increase, I would probably turn that down because I would not feel I have the experience to be ready to perform as expected with that job. However, the CEO of this company should have never offered me the job and should be fired for even offering me the job. It is really that person's fault for offering me the job in the first place and setting me up to fail.

Pope knew what he was getting into and accepted the job anyway. However, the person that hired him should get the most blame.

Is it your fault if you don’t have the same level of intelligence as Neil deGrasse Tyson or Stephen Hawking? That’s a wild take. Pope’s doing the best he can, which isn’t good enough.

It isn’t my fault that I’m not as skillful in MMA as Georges St. Pierre. Lol.

Pope is in over his head & he didn’t hire the right staff to compensate for his weaknesses.
Got very lucky last year in several games .
i love Pope as a former Ky player & really thought he was perfect for the job looking at his resume & his offense. But this year is already a disaster which even Pope supporters like me are realizing that our Love of Ky Basketball is stronger than our support for Pope.

true
he and his staff hand picked this group
if the average "joe" fan can see what this team lacks, why couldn't these so called high priced coaches?
I think they will but coaching is a fraternity. They care more about what’s in their best interest more than what’s in our best interest. It’s kind of like if you work in an office and it’s a multi-site company, the frontline workers are going to have certain emphasis (no idea the correct plural word there lol) and emphasis by corporate may be very different. Coaches want job stability.

I would be more patient if Pope had closed the deal on some recruits. Not that 2-3 freshman are going to be the end all for UK but the fact Pope apparently whiffed on portal guts that were difference makers and nothing is lined up gives me little hope he can right the ship.
Do you know why he didn't close the deal? Was it solely him that lost the recruits? Start there.

I would gladly take the job of Apple CFO.

When the clock strikes midnight on his career, his time at UK will have been well worth the 2-3 years of stress. 75% buyout
All on the backs of miserable Kentucky fans who have had to deal with his mediocrity.

I don't think it was, and it doesn't answer the first question. Of course none of us were in the room.
Ok, well we think two different things then. I’d like to say I know. But nobody knows exactly. I have reasons for believing it’s mostly a Pope problem. Will just leave it at that.

Start with the portal guys pre new JMI first and then worry about post new JMI deal. Did he land any portal guy for his offense? JQ he was willing to gamble on.

Bro. We’d all take the job and the salary and stock options that came with it. You included.

Both can be true. It’s on Barnfart and Pope. Pope accepted his dream job. Can’t fault him for that. But after getting to this point and proving he is not the man for the job, if he truly loves UK as much as he says, he will walk away after this year. He can say in every post game he isn’t backing down and he will figure it out.
But he has nothing coming in next year. We are complaining about no 4 or 5 stars, hell he won’t even sign a 3 star.
And the portal won’t be any more kind. He has nothing coming momentum anywhere on the recruiting front and next year could be 100x worse. He has to see that.
Walk away Pope. From talent, to fire, to personality…all the above…he isn’t the man for this sideline.

I worked for a loooong time. I saw MANY types of workers come and go. There are those who are lazy, those who get with it (though not many these days, sorriest generation for working I’ve ever seen), that’s an argument for another day though, those who struggled, those who coasted, etc. The one type of employee I never had a problem with was the one who gave 100% effort, even if it took a while for them to grasp what needed to be done and establish maximum proficiency. Effort is all you can ask of someone.
I know Mark Pope is giving all he has. Most of the time this type worker ends up being the best in the long run if you stick with them, as long as the knowledge and willingness to learn and adapt is there. I know this is a different type business and all, but time is important. He needs all the support he can get and BBN is big enough to make an impactful difference. People should have a little more patience and see what, let’s say, the next 1 1/2 years holds. People might be pleasantly surprised.

I 100% agree with this if you’re saying people should be patient with Pope working at a factory or bagging groceries.

(I’m joking)

Id love for it to work with Pope, but I haven’t seen anything to make me believe he will figure it out with more time. This is the most demanding job in the country and he looks fried 15 months into it.

Anyone who thinks anything from the Internet is real are idiots and not real fans but cowards who just hate. Don’t fall fore it.
I took your advice. Now, I know this post is false and must be discredited.

I’m joking

Man, fans are going to be mad and they should be. We are 9-6 and wouldn’t be an NCAA tournament team at the moment. I really would be saddened if everything was ho-hum while things are this bad. I get the negativity is overwhelming but it’s justified.

Not portal difference makers. Those were pre new JMI deal.
JMI 2025 extension. The contract with JMI started in '14. It may be a contributor to some of our recruiting misses. Better deals elsewhere? I certainly can't diagnose the causes of this team being so bad. Especially after the way it was talked up pre-season.

Let’s not confuse effort with results.
