For anyone who doesn't follow the Hawkeye Wrestling Club account on YouTube, I'd recommend it as they've put out some really cool BTS footage over the past few weeks.

The video above (posted today) is obviously some late-match situational wrestling between Spencer and Drake.

And below (from a few weeks ago) is Spencer drilling with Brandon Sorensen at the end of a tough practice:

I know Lee trains outside of HWC too, but Lee’s drilling partners at Iowa are Ayala and Sorenson and a few others. Meanwhile I know PJ Duke is also training outside NLWC some, but does have chances to train with NLWC and drill against Dake, Nolf, Zain, Nick Lee, Haines, Kasak, Mesenbrink, Van Ness, and Sealy. The clubs seem to be getting further apart.

Lee has been training with Ayala, DeSanto, Sorensen, Otoguro, Takuto, Dan Dennis, Tom and Terry Brands. I think he’s in pretty good hands.

Lee has a Silver with those partners.

What do those Nit Wit guys have?
Maybe he’d have a gold with better partners. Indisputable that there is way more competition in NLWC room. Maybe that allows Lee more focused time. I’m a big Hawk fan, it just surprised me that Sorenson was one of his better training partners.

Sorenson was a 4x AA and NCAA Finalist. He is also a decent amount bigger. I am pretty sure he could push EVERY 57kg wrestler in the world VERY HARD…

I guess the thing I’m looking at is what this does for Ayala! Lee will be Lee and I’m sure as hell not worried about him or is training partners whom I still believe will push him to where he wants to go. Good vibes coming from the room.

Lot of good stuff coming out from HWC. Spencer looking beastly. And this training partner situation has to be great for Ayala's continued development.

There was also a really good interview on Flo that CP did with Spencer recently. Think it might be behind the paywall since I can't find one elsewhere.

Link to SL interview. No paywall.

Whose orbital bone did Spencer say he broke with his knee when doing a whizzer?
Keisuke Otoguro - a 2021 Olympian for Japan at 74kg.

I believe he’s in the middle of a two-year stint in Iowa where he’s studying English at the school while helping out in the wrestling room as well.

He’s also the older brother of 2021 Olympic champ Takuto Otoguro (65kg).
