Some positives to take away from the game

No, I definitely don't think the loss is a positive and definitely not one to the little brothers. However, Chandler establish himself as a shooting guard and at 57% three point shooting is a blessing. William making the most out of his brief time out there and finally seen a three pointer go through the basket I think was huge.. Aberdeen showing he has the capability of being that go to guy when need be and he has a fighter. Moreno is growing every game. He plays as a player. And they showed grit coming back with two large deficits.. none of this makes up for all the things that went wrong last night, but there was some good to take from it.

It's so weird. I mean I want to say a big positive was overcoming two separate 18 point deficits but at the same time I can't help but worry the mere fact we were down 18 twice. This loss could have been by way more than it was.

Even last season. Even in big games we won vs Duke and Gonzaga we were down big 1st half. Definitely not something we want to make a trend here.

The positives to me was we actually shot it well. We made nearly 60% of our 2s and made 35% of our threes which isn't bad. In additional, we rebounded 32% of our misses. Offensively we put up 1.15 ppp. That's not bad. In games we did that last season, we were 17-2. Probably going to win a good bunch of games doing that.

An intangible you didn’t mention was that we didn’t quit. With all the demonization of our team at the hands of our own fans, fact is they showed a great deal of heart. Now I realize that saying anything positive is claiming a moral victory according to the storm crows, fact is we show some punch in grim circumstances. The quitters are ready to fire the coach, who in fact, did not make a turnover or miss a free throw. For those of us that still support the team, there are reasons to expect Pope and the team will have a good year.

Same thing happened this year in Alabama football. Lost first game and the lunatic fringe fans lost their crap. Of course they pulled off 8 straight. The demented rushed to hide among normal fans at that point. Likely the same is about to happen here.

And then there is 2014.

Football and basketball are two completely different sports that can't be compared to each other. Why ? Because basketballs season is so much longer and due to this a few losses doesn't impact you like football does. Losing a game early in basketball isn't that big of a deal. All these people saying we suck and Pope should be fired must not remember all the early season games Cal lost, Tubby lost or Pitino lost. Seems to be an agenda against Pope. I do expect this team to keep getting better but they will take a couple more losses first. Remember the end game is compete for the best end of season and possible final fours or Championships. We have had the majority of our teams take early season losses.

Not comparing the sports. Comparing the blathering doom speak of a ‘special’ segment of the fanbase.

Reasons for optimism:
  • Kam Williams sighting. He could be a major impact player if he can show up consistently, hit threes, and defend like he did
  • Lowe can get to the basket and find the open man with ease. The question will be, can he get to the basket and finish?
  • Chandler is a gamer. Beautiful shot and reliable on both ends
  • Aberdeen seems like he’ll be a steady leader who can go get a bucket when the momentum favors the other team. I don’t yet know what to think of his shot, he seems to either make it or airball it
  • Oweh missed a lot of the offseason with injury. I think he’ll find his form before conference play starts, and in the meantime other guys will have to step up and they’ll get valuable experience leading the team
  • Moreno looks really solid. Not an athletic menace but a big body guy who plays smart
  • The team and coaches showed some moxie and ability to adjust coming back from two major deficits
  • Potentially our best player isn’t even on the court yet in JQ
