I think we already know what it was. UK spent around $5 million combined for Oweh and Garrison. That cost us any real shot at Ament or Wilson.
The staff decided to spend another $2 million or so combined on the back four of the roster (Potter, Hawthorne, Noah, and Kam). Cut two of those guys out, and you've probably cleared another million.
Then we've got a $2 million dollar investment who is presently injured, and a $1.5 million dollar investment in Jasper Johnson who can't defend. That's $10.5 million combined on Garrison/Oweh/Johnson (can't defend)/JQ (injured)/Potter/Hawthorne/Kam/Noah.
If Oweh had gone pro, then you spend $4 million on Ament. If you lose Garrison and don't add JQ, you have more than enough for Wilson. We're feeling the weight of JQ's absence right now, so I'm not going to be critical on losing Wilson until I see what JQ gives us in the late-winter/spring.
They simply need to reallocate their funds and go more top-heavy in the future. I'm not sure having a team filled with 12 Allen Edwards and Heshimu Evans-level guys is conducive to winning a national title. In fact, I know it isn't. You need an Antoine Walker here or there. Side note on Kam: I'd actually like to see more Kam Williams and less Noah/Jasper. Neither one of those guys can defend.
So yeah. We have the money. Many, including you, thought the major markets would outbid us, and they haven't. We have as much or more money than anyone. We just might be spending it in the wrong places. So while we may not land a kid because of our tradition, it's our tradition that allows us to have the funds to afford a Wilson or an Ament. The only question is whether or not Pope thinks they're worth the money.
