Song- no one can equal "Unchained Melody" as done by the Righteous Brothers

Movie- Roadhouse- obviously

others?

A lot of movies could not be remade with the same humor today. Folks could easily ruin these films with political correctness and whatnot.

What would 2025 Trading Places look like? 😖

Song - Bohemian Rhapsody. In fact, outside of karaoke amateur hour, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone of significance attempt it.

Movie - There are a lot IMO for lots of reasons, but the two I settled on are One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. I think the biggest reason is there is no Jack Nicholson or ‘perfect age’ Matthew Broderick to do them.

Any attempt at Airplane, Used Cars, Blazing Saddles, Animal House, and some others would be ridiculously lousy.

As far as music, no one wants to listen to a computer enhanced voice cover a 60's or 70's song when youtube will give you the real deal.

Tropic Thunder - perfect the way it was. A remake would be ludicrous and they would never go as far comedically as the original.

  • Four Leaf Tayback: Spanking a child turns him into a snot. Fear, that's what makes him a man. I know a place where a man's worth is measured by the ears hanging off his dog tags. The real hardcore ****! You wanna make this movie right? That's where you take your pansy *** actors.
  • Les Grossman: Who is this guy?
  • Studio Executive Rob Slolom: Les, that's Four Leaf.
  • Four Leaf Tayback: Sergeant Four Leaf Tayback. I wrote the book.
  • Les Grossman: Wow. You're a great American. This nation owes you a huge debt. Now shut the **** up and let me do my job!

Zac Brown Band opened for Kenny Chesney last summer and covered it live in their set. It was strangely good.

Anything done by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show can't be covered by today's artists. Gummies and vapes don't get it done.

The is a Zac Brown Band cover of it out there. It's not Queen, but it's not terrible.

The Righteous Brothers version was a cover version. There were at least ten recorded cover versions before they got around to it. My grandma had both the Harry Belafonte and Liberace versions of it from the 50s. While I’m a fan of Phil Spector’s production work, I think his production of the Righteous Brothers’ version over complicated a good vocal performance.

Spector made them famous though. GC played guitar on You've Lost That Loving Feeling. I would guess Hal Blaine was on drums and Carol Kaye was on bass. It was one of his proudest memories.

Airplane was going to be my movie choice.
Springsteen did an album of covers of soul classics that all fall well short of the originals. As much as I love Springsteen, I have no desire to hear him sing recorded songs that were sung by artists with much better voices than him.

I hate youtube with their 5 commercials before you can watch and listen to the song.

Anyone consider - Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing (Alchemy Live)

Take your pick - 1939...one heck of a year for good movies.

  • gone with the wind
  • The wizard of oz
  • Stagecoach
  • Mr. Smith goes to Washington
  • Wuthering Heights
  • Goodbye, Mr. Chips
  • Of Mice and Men
  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame
  • Gunga Din
  • The Little Princess (Shirley Temple)
  • The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
  • Gulliver's Travels
  • Midnight

If you grew up in the 50's to early 60's, you recall that every community had an adult baseball team. In some cases, fading or former major leaguers would "barnstorm" off the beaten path. I recall my brother getting autographs from the likes of Ralph Houk and Billy Hunter (who just passed and was the last living St. Louis Brown), when they played in Sunbury Pa. Satchel Paige pitched in Tharptown (right outside of Shamokin) on a field that was adjacent to a gas station my Dad ran.
Baseball was every day in the summer. Wake up, grap your bat, glove and a taped baseball and jump on your bike to look for some other guys to get a "game." This in addition to the "organized" teams most of us played on similar to Little League and later 13-15 age group. I walked several miles with friends to Bunker Hill (in Shamokin) at least twice a week to play in a summer league there.
Baseball was more than a sport to us. We knew the line ups and BA of every player in the majors.
Until I was 11, there were only 16 teams in the major leagues. Players didn't move from organization to organization. The reserve clause had players shackled to one organization.
So for me, the movie that will never be duplicated is "Field of Dreams." Like Doc Graham, I long for the smell of the fresh cut grass, the baby oil on my mitt. I'll never not tear up when Ray Kinsella asks "Dad" to have a catch.
Times have changed and I don't know if baseball is revered as it once was.....or if the game is passed down from father to son. But I know that I never said no when my boys wanted to have batting practice and those are some of my greatest memories.

You're describing my Dad's youth. Montgomery, PA.

I think even the morons in Hollywood realize that Field of Dreams is perfect, and will never age.

My grandfather was on the crew that built the minor league stadium in Sunbury.

Roger Rabbit, Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road.
We had Dead Skunk on 45 when we were kids.

Take a whiff on me,
that ain't no rose.
Roll up your window
and hold your nose.
You don't have to look
and you don't have to see
'cause you can feel it in
your olfactory.
