spelling bees are about the integrity and importance of the spelling of the english language. when christopher columbus landed on plymouth rock and invented our language he would have never dreamed in his worst nightmare that eight kids would have tied for the spelling bee crown. when he celebrated the first thanksgiving and held the first bee the kids who lost were put to death. sure the winner was his kid and all the others were injuns and didn't speak english but still it was the principle of the thing.
