As we continue previewing spring practice with the top storylines facing the Kentucky football program (see: Part I on the QB competition and Part II on the offensive staff changes), today we'll take a look at the defensive line.

Gone: Cory Johnson, Melvin Lewis, Farrington Huguenin. But still the possibility that this unit surprises.

Thank you JRowland. It is certainly a wait and see element of the defense. I tend to be optimistic about them. Go Cats!!

I am definetly in the minority that thinks the dline will be pretty good. You have some guys that have been part of the system for 3 years. If the dline was a giant question mark coach Brumbaugh would not still be here.

I think it's a fan conditioned mindset. Following the Cats for so long has taught them that playing a bunch of newer names doesn't end well. They default to "they're gonna stink."

Personally, I feel we will be ok. The line will perform about like last yr. not stellar but not poor. But, I think the perception is that they will look much better. Mostly due to improved offense, LB, and secondary play.

yep, and like jrow said, by ratings, this is as good a group as UK has had in quite a while. i think if we stay relatively healthy all the negative nancy's will be wondering how we replaced all those guys from last year and got better.

Nice article JR. Without any question, Lewis and Johnson were, far and away, UK,s two best DLs. JMO of course but a few additional observations and comments...

NT...Elam MUST come in in MUCH better playing condition than last season (I.e., 330-ish) if he is going to be a meaningful player. Despite his size, he is simply not effective as a 2 gapper and when in a 1 tech is often handled 1 on 1 by the C. FWIW, I believe his height works against him at this position.

DTs...I have long maintained that the 3-4 front is REALY a 3 DT front as all 3 DLs are never any wider than a 4 tech. So even if you call one of the DLs a "DE" he is really playing a DT position. The point being all 3 DLs need DT size and strength. And 4-3 fronts very frequently employ a "NT guy" playing a 1 tech.

ALIGNMENTS...sideline camera angles make it pretty difficult to distinguish alignments (I.e., techniques) but I suspect UK plays a lot of single gap 3-4 front. While this lessens the load on the DLs it adds to the "complexity" of the LB play especially when coupled with "hybrid" play of the JACK.

As far as pass rush goes, 3-4 teams usually put in rush package on passing downs but can be at a rush disadvantage against the pass in "50/50" situations. As I noted in another thread, this staff comes from strong 4-3 roots and there are some big differences in front 7 play between these two schemes. All in all, I think there is still a 3-4 coaching learning curve going on. All of course, JMO.

Peace

Our defense should be much improved for one critical reason, I believe the offense will be much better. The UL game was the worst example but there were many times where the complete ineptitude of the offensive side of the ball just wore down the defense.

I've seen this view expressed by a number of posters but there is not much data to support it. Naturally there were some games more one sided than others but, on the year, against FBS opponents...

UK TOP 29:19
OPP TOP 30:41

UK PPG 69.5
OPP PPG 71.4

So, on the average, opponents held the ball 1 minute 22 seconds longer than UK and ran 1.9 more plays per game. I find it hard to believe that is a large enough differential to wear down the defense.

Peace

7 straight 3 and outs in the 2nd half is pretty much going to wear out a defense. I prefer to use my eyes when deciding if an offense negatively affects a defense. Top stats are very deceiving.
