I have a nephew at Bellarmine. It's woke to an extreme level. He takes a criminal justice class that the professor has dubbed "Criminal Injustice". The professor is a woman with full body tattoos and has told the students not to bother questioning anything that she teaches or they will be tossed from the class. Whatever happened to the Socratic method? Of course they would have a football that excludes the people who are built to play the sport. It's not like they have a varsity team either.

Unfortunately that's most universities these days.

I don't care if they create a soy boy football team. They can wear pu**y hat helmets and ***** pacifier mouth guards for all I care.

The problem will be when they try to destroy real football, which I'm sure they will eventually. It's what they do.

I think the NFL should look into weight limits on players. Nothing crazy, but like 275 for linemen, 225 for backs, etc. I think it would help for the CTE and health issues without impacting the game.

1) Sprint football isn’t new. Has been at Ivy League and Army/Navy a long time.
2) This is almost definitely Bellarmine tip toeing their way to D1 football
3) People ***** about anything
Bellarime with it's 3,300 enrollment is never going to play D1 football. Maybe they could play with the likes of Centre. They also have the problem of being a small campus with little room for expansion for football facilities.

The time when this crowd can claim righteous indignation over incorrect assumptions of their motivations is long past. That ship has sailed.

You’re probably not wrong there. Centre would be pretty good goal for them

If they want to make it exciting, should let the o-line go down field and be eligible receivers.

Wofford plays D1 FCS with 2000 students. Rice has 2800 and plays D1 FBS.

Not a lot of similar size schools but it can be done. Can’t see Bellarmine doing more than FCS but given their infrastructure even that will be hard.

It costs a hell of a lot for a school to support an NCAA team. Not just in athletics. It sucks resources throughout the school tracking all the student-athlete details (housing, fin-aid, registrar, legal, institutional research, etc.). There is a lot of "paperwork", plus constant training and formal meetings requiring representation of administrators across campus. I imagine a lot of the smaller schools ignore or possibly hide the non-athletic expenses, but it is significant.

If NCAA is the goal, they'd better have a lot of funding other than tuition, unless the students don't mind paying for it.

Yes this is clearly an assault against America.

Counterintuitive, but athletic scholarships are the hook that guarantees enrollment for small schools.

I can’t speak to Bellermine, but my wife graduated from a small private college. They had an enrollment of under 1000 in the early 90’s that had been stabile for decades.

But, by the late 90’s, they had fallen to just over 500. It was pretty bleak, but the answer was athletics.

These aren’t full scholarships. They are about 1/3 to 1/2 off. The school marks up the expenses to be able to give the discount scholarship. It’s like the perpetual sale at Kohls.

My wife’s school has enrollment of ~2500 now. About 80% are on some sort of athletic scholarship. It seems like the baseball team has 100 kids on it.

It’s a win for both sides. The college moves forward. The kids and their parents get to continue the dream by obtaining the athletic scholarship.

If Bellermine is handing out full rides, wow!

Otherwise, it’s just a shell game to increase enrollment.

You are dead on balls accurate. I coached at a small NAIA school, they didnt care if we carried 30 players on the girls softball team. The more the better

I think it depends on what department you are in. My youngest son goes there and is an accounting/finance double major and my oldest son is in their MBA program. Both say their professors are generally conservative.

Don't even need scholarships. Last school I worked at was a D3, so no scholarships, and the enrollment was largely driven by the athletics teams. Some of the teams even added JV teams to bring in more students, and they added a couple sports for basically no reason but helping get beds filled. School was somewhere in the low 1000s for enrollment

Some of the schools in the "sister conference" actually had rules in place where they were required to have JV teams and an X # of players on both the varsity and JV teams. It made for some really ****** players seeing the floor in garbage time because no one really cares about a JV teams and the 18th guy on the bench, you just take a warm body that's willing to go to the school.

I love the people that brag about their kid getting a "full ride" to play sports at a D3 school.

A lot of the d3 athletics hook solid players up with obscure scholarships and grants. So there could be some legitimacy to going to school for close to free, but it won’t be an athletic scholly.
