I'm coming to NEPA for a big family get together. While in the area, my grand daughter wants to tour PSU. She will be a junior this fall. We will drive up next Tuesday to a tour and since her tour begins at 3pm, we are looking for a place for dinner before the drive back to NEPA. My grand daughter and her mom are big sushi fans, I unfortunately am not. Are there any good sushi places in State College. I know some good places for American food in town but I am at a lost for sushi. Any help would be appreciated.
BTW, any new higher end eateries in town since it has been several years since I have been back to SC

Thanks everyone, we looked at yelp and saw Tadashi but not Kamrai. I wanted some opinions from people I trust which is why I posted here. Thanks for your help and opinions.

Distance from the ocean makes me wonder just how good can raw fish be in central PA?
Most of the best Japanese restaurants in this country bring in the majority of their fish from Japan, so a 5-hour drive from the nearest ocean isn't really an obstacle.

Where did she decide to go
Sadly she wanted to go to PSU badly. She is interested in Forensic Chemistry. She was accepted at the two best accredited programs in the East, PSU and West Virginia. She and her parents had a tough decision.
It came down to cost. PSU was approximately 10 K more than WVU. Plus WVU gave her a yearly renewable $14K merit scholarship. PSU gave her zero help. $24,000 was just too much to overcome. She let WVU she would be attending in the fall on Monday.
I am bummed but can understand that over 4 years she saved $96 K for her education. She (and I) know she would love Penn State, but the economics did PSU in. Its too bad too, because she is a great kid that PSU would have been lucky too have.

I’ve been to Tadashi a few times, and their non-sushi items are also very good. The short ribs and pork belly appetizers are really good. As are their udon options.

At that difference in cost, it would pretty much make it a no-brainer. Good luck to her.

Yes she was sad but relieved now that she decided. Thanks for the good wishes. The WVU program in Forensic science is really good. They have two murder houses where they stage crimes with the DNA of the students where A team of these kids learn how to collect evidence, process it and use.it to solve the crime. Pretty cool setup.

She and her parents should never feel badly about making a wise financial decision.

My daughter and son in law really wanted to send her to her first choice which was Penn State after her tour in the summer of 2023. She fell in love with the place and the students she spoke to on her tour.
That's what made the decision so excruciatingly difficult. But they could not afford that extra cost and my granddaughters future would be burdened with almost 100 K more to pay back in loans.
Like it has been said, it ended up being a no brainer.
She leaves to Morgantown in early August to move In and then attend a 6 day adventure in the mountains biking, white water rafting etc. This was only $95 to meet other freshman and get a head start on acclimating to her new environment. When they return they begin orientation.
Everything we have learned so far, WVU is off to a great start and Erin and her parents are happy with her choice.

Hey Big Guy, when you go visit her in Morgantown, make a point to buy her lunch at Yama. Morgantown is a great college town and WVU is an excellent University.

This is too common and the reason all four of mine are and will be attending universities on scholarships elsewhere.

But congratulations are in order on getting an academic schollie and being accepted to a top-level forensic chem school!

Thanks ApexLion , we live in Michigan north of Detroit. Getting an academic scholarship for out of state tuition is amazing. She is a 4.0 student while being an albino, which affects her eyesight. She has overcome her 20/40 eyesight by sitting in the front row of class and using her phone to blow up the white board when in class. She is even on her high schools mountain bike and ski teams with that poor eyesight.
Sorry for bragging on my granddaughter, but she really is a special kid who I am very proud of.

My youngest is a Freshman now at UP - we are in state and it actually cost mine less than it did for her sister who went to a private school in Savannah and received several scholarships and it still cost me more. If we were out of state she most likely would not be at PSU due to the costs and lack of any scholarships for the most part.

She is indeed special and I’m glad she found a school that wants her. I have 3 daughters including one with a learning disability and I’ve said the same thing to them - it’s good to be wanted, value people and organizations who value you. Congrats to her and your family.

My daughter is a Sophomore at Towson University studying Forensic Chemistry. She wanted to go to West Virginia but the difference in cost is how she ended up at Towson. The more she did her research though, she found that Towson has a good program as well. I wouldn't let her apply to PSU for both financial and personal reasons.

Good luck to your daughter. I hated chemistry and admire anyone who can master that science.
