Defense has played well sans two plays. Unfortunately for us, there are more stats that factor in other than total yards.
THAT is part of the problem in my opinion. Because of the scheme, it only takes a couple of busted plays for the other team to be winning, no matter that the other 95% of the time you played great defense. An aggressive defense is a dumb scheme.

It's still far better than last years passive attempt.
You can't compare last year because the team gave up and it was being run by a guy with mental problems.

You will see this.. week after week and ask yourselves how can the other team be in the game or winning it, when everything is tilted so far in your favor.. it is like it isn't even fair. It's a dumb scheme, that is why.

Do you want nice stats or do you want to win games?

Total yards are nice. Seems like we did that last week too. Would be nice if it translated to a W today.

Defense isn't the problem today. It's clearly turnovers and special teams. Are you even watching the game?

Wait Riley had mental health issues?

Troy was supposedly a trash team, yet I see their guys running into the end zone untouched. If you think our defensive scheme is good, I don't know what to tell you.

who said they were a trash team?

Scheme is about as good as we are going to get with our DB talent, IMO

That was the consensus on this board..

When you don't have a quick strike offense especially under Bunch, then it makes more sense to play much less aggressively on D, but let's see what happens.

And yet, they were good enough to go undefeated last year. The offense needs the ball a lot in this game it seems. If we play a passive D and allow the opposing team to win the possession clock with long drawn out drives, guess what? We are gonna lose.

You may not like this D and that’s fine. But I will tell you right now, a lot of people prefer this one to the passive D’s...

Look at it this way. Our offense is still figuring out how to run the playbook. When we are efficient and knowledgeable with the playbook (Frost has said year 2) our offense will not stall nearly as much as it has to start this year. We will be scoring almost at will if UCF is any indication. Heck, if we could score tds today instead of field goals, we would be winning right now. When the offense starts to click, the defense will be much better as well, because one bad play won’t be he disaster it is currently without our offense doing its part.

Defense held up most of this game, a ******** pass interference penalty wrecked them mentally on that last drive, while the offense sputtered and piddlyfarted around for 90% of the game.

Prefer it all you want.. the score matters, not the stats. The aggressive defense is exactly that, a 1 play disaster and the other team has points, like the snap of your finger. You don't force them to earn it. Sure, it's fun to watch the sacks and harassing the opposing QB. I agree with that, but losing games sucks too.

But the defense playing aggressive didn't lose the game today. Troy's defense played aggressive too, so by that logic, neither team should have won. Bunch didn't have the escapability to handle the pass rush and the offense bogged down as a result which allowed them to stay aggressive. Turning the ball over, and poor special teams play were the ultimate deciding factors.

Their first touchdown run was Honas missing an open run through. He probably makes that play 9 out of 10 times. That is not coaching, that is player execution. The problem with this game was, three turnovers, penalties and special teams.

Our best two offensive drives were at the end of both halves when we were really speeding things up.

No one said aggressive defense = loss, that is a gross oversimplification.

The point I am trying to make here is that given the lack of offensive firepower (with Bunch) we should have backed off on the aggressive defense scheme.

Remember, that scheme is designed to compliment the offense, in trying to get the ball back as quick as possible, even if that means giving up the big play and getting scored on.

It is the opposite of controlling the clock and when you have a high powered offense, then it makes more sense because it is a bit of a shootout mentality.

You don't play shootout schemes on D when your offense isn't capable of it for whatever reason.

It is sort of like playing a half baked plan, because one side of it (the offense) can't operate how you expect under Bunch vs. Martinez. (not saying it really clicked for Martinez either, but the offense was better under him)

Who said they were trash? 11-2 with a win at LSU last year...that would be a good nebraska season.

Frost didn't expect much from Bunch, they were going to play it like you would with a 3rd string walk-on. Get an early lead and lean on the oline and defense. It was always going to be a close game if we played well...we gave away 7 points...probably should have expected to win 21-17, which is what it would have been without the PR and if we make our short FG.

Defense only gave up 17 points. Don't forget special teams with the 10 point flip and that 20 yard punt.
