Three takeaways from Penn State basketball's loss to Miami
Penn State Nittany Lions basketball suffered a close defeat to the Miami Hurricanes on Wednesday night at the Bryce Jordan Center.
If Penn State had not fired Pat Chambers (and, in 2020, if not for COVID, of course) would Penn State Basketball right now be in legitimate contention for a third straight trip to the NCAAs? We'll never know for sure, of course, but a backcourt of Jones, Brockington, and Wheller, along with Harrar at the post and Lundy and Dread available at wings, might form the nucleus of a tourney caliber team, I would think.Unfortunately, I was only able to watch the last 12 minutes due to the Nebraska-NC St game going 4 overtimes; however, what I saw in those 12 minutes was awful.
Lee out of the boot and getting closer…Scott is back practicing and I’d expect to see him in the Wagner game next week. What's the status on a couple of the transfers who have not been been able to play yet?
Based on his history, Pat would have found a way to underachieve with that group. I'm not sure what folks saw from Pat that would indicate he would have done otherwise. If Penn State had not fired Pat Chambers (and, in 2020, if not for COVID, of course) would Penn State Basketball right now be in legitimate contention for a third straight trip to the NCAAs? Probably. Shrewsberry gets at least 4 years just like any coach should. At the 4 year mark, all the players are players he recruited. He tried to keep guys that left, but they obviously did not like that the University got rid of Chambers. If Penn State had not fired Pat Chambers (and, in 2020, if not for COVID, of course) would Penn State Basketball right now be in legitimate contention for a third straight trip to the NCAAs? Turnovers and poor 3 pt shooting are the main culprits. Both can partially be traced back to continuity and knowing where each other will be on the floor. Lundy needs to figure out what he is doing soon, turnovers have cleaned up some but bad shooting from deep (4-26 last 3 games) and not getting to the line is killing them.Shrewsberry's offense places a premium on players' decision-making, and clearly the squad is not comfortable with this offensive scheme yet. That takes some time, and I'm betting it comes together sometime in January. It will also help a lot when Jevonnie Scott and Greg Lee are ready to play in the frontcourt.
Yes, it's an "old" squad with experienced players, but a lot of new faces that are learning to play together.
To be clear, my comment wasn't a critique of Shrewsberry. Just a "what if" thought with regard to what might have reasonably taken place if Penn State hadn't reboot the whole thing by firing Chambers - including the mass exodus of most of the contributors on the roster..Probably. Shrewsberry's first recruiting class for 2022 (6th in Big Ten), is one 4-star player and four 3-star players, one is 6-8 and another 6-10. So he is off to a good start, just none of them can help until next year. We will see how it goes.
Our team under the prior coach played very poor defense imo; it is already better, much better, under this coach. To be clear, my comment wasn't a critique of Shrewsberry. As I said, I wouldn't even begin to critique, or care to critique, "coaching abilities" of either - and certainly not of one vs the other. So I really don't have anything to contribute on that topic. Our team under the prior coach played very poor defense imo; it is already better, much better, under this coach.
I also like his calm demeanor, which imo translates into calmer play from our players.
I like both things.
Adjusted Defensive Efficiency since Ed's last year...Our team under the prior coach played very poor defense imo; it is already better, much better, under this coach.

I agree on the coaches demeanor but defensively we are nowhere close. Brockington and Wheeler were far superior Defenders than anybody on the current team. Our team under the prior coach played very poor defense imo; it is already better, much better, under this coach.

I think this team will improve once PSU is able to work other 2 transfer "bigs" into the rotation.I agree on the coaches demeanor but defensively we are nowhere close. Brockington and Wheeler were far superior Defenders than anybody on the current team.
