So is this a thread about unfortunate kids born to dumb parents? Where is this conversation going?

Not even a little
Surprised it's a pit bull.

"They're big sweethearts !!"

lol, no.

The wife and I were taking our beagle for a walk and a guy with a pitbull was coming our direction. I had to get my wife to take our dog like 20' away because it acted like it wanted to either play rough or snap at my dog. I walked up close to it and man those things have a head designed to kill on it. I can see why people are worried about that breed. Of course most issues are due to the owners.

When I was looking to adopt a dog, one of the shelters I went to was probably 90% full of pitbulls. The shelter just so happened to be located near a poorer/bad neighborhood. Why people in bad areas continue to breed these dogs that most people don't want is beyond me? They need to stop watching Pitbulls and Parolees.

Anyone, especially teens, texting of playing with their cell phones while driving or even behind the wheel. There should be a law requiring cp manufacturers to install technology that disables phones while the car is in gear. Idiots.

I believe you answered your own question. Why do people in bad neighborhoods do things?

Stupidity leads to poverty. Poor people live in bad neighborhoods. Bad neighborhoods are full of stupidity. This is not rocket science to figure out folks. The hard part is stupid people are bad parents to so their kids get stuck in their crap.

Nothing screams "sound decisions" more than having to feed your family on food stamps while having to find the cash to feed 2-3 100lb dogs.

I mean... where will the tattoo money come from?

Just had another thought on pit owners. Always the argument of nature vs nurture... and it always comes from the folks who claim to know how to raise these dogs correctly, yet use the f-word at their kids.

Every. Time.

Yeah, because what we really need are more laws.

I asked a female colleague why poor people do stupid things...like get tatoos, drive expensive cars, wear fancy clothes, etc... She said it's because they can't feel successful in most of the ways we do, but those are the few things they can afford that they believe to be associated with success, having money, etc... Having mean, powerful dogs gives them a sense of power and strength.
Specifically, I was asking why so many very heavy, unkempt women have tatoos. Thus her response.

You brought up stupidity... but I'd say anyone breaking a law is acting stupidly. Generally, behavior that poses a threat of personal injury to others or self; behavior that burdens others; behavior that involves damaging or depriving others of their property.
I understand your position. IMO, having laws and prisons (I think we should have more) is an unfortunate consequence of our free society.

Should it continue to be legal to use cellphones when driving? Lots of data to show it's quite risky.

I'm not a law-dog, but I'd say most of them.

You should have adopted one.

I adopted our beagle mix. No way in hell am I adopting a dog that is a known dangerous animal and one that raises the cost of your home owner's insurance. There are definitely exceptions to the rule, but why risk your kids' safety to find out? You never know the full background of these dogs before ending up in the shelter and that combined with a violent dog is asking for trouble. If I were single and the dog would not be around kids then sure I might consider adopting one. It wouldn't be my choice for a family dog though.

Yes, obviously new car, new tattoo, etc. Those things put you at the center of attention for quite a while. A lot of these things are just attention seeking devices that come from bad parenting. If your parents basically ignored you and gave you no love or affection, then you're going to seek attention in other ways. Tattoos in my mind are just an extension of inappropriate attention seeking behavior in schools. I.e. Most of the kids who misbehaved at school had no home life whatsoever and were seeking attention through inappropriate behavior. By the time they are adults they have either given up and turned to drugs and alcohol to soothe their pain or they are still doing inappropriate attention seeking things.

In my 30 years as an educator, I dealt with thousands of kids. In those years, it was a very rare exception that I had problems with a kid that lived with both parents provided neither was a drunk or addict. The single most important factor impacting the ways kids turn out is the presence of a functional mother and father. That said, I've also encountered many kids who've seemingly drawn a line in the sand, saying "I'll be damned if my life as an adult and my own family will be like this" ...and went on to have good lives. Even then, they had significant, positive adult role models.

what if your music or podcast is on your phone? Are you not allowed to touch the radio either? What's the difference?
