He did better than win the competition, he won his life. That was close. They interviewed him later after he got out of the water and had a chance to think about what happened, he was really tore up about it.

Lots of attacks occur in waist deep water so you're not safe there either

Mick Fanning has been the only one on par with Kelly Slater the past handful of years. But the crazy thing about this is that this is the first time in the history of professional surfing it's ever occurred.

South Africa is notorious for sharks. Australia isn't much better. I enjoy surfing but no way in hell would I get in the water in those two countries.

While doing the family vacation thing along the Gulf Coast, when I was a kid... I was out in the water and people on the shore were waving their arms and shouting. I couldn't really hear them, but started heading back to see what they wanted... finally, I heard "shark" as I got closer.

I swear I did that lizard run the rest of the way^^^

In South Africa, there are a bunch of shark dive boats where people pay to get up close to great white sharks. They lower 2-4 people over the side of a boat in a cage and then chum the water with blood and bait. Scientists suspect that the sharks have begun to associate humans with food from these dive operations. Hence the rise in shark attacks in South African waters.

Cage diving isn't always that safe. I bet this diver crapped his wet-suit at about the 1:40 mark.
